I would like to replace the original thermometer in my WSM 18.5 with a Tel-Tru BQ300. My question is, before I spend $50 on the new thermometer, will the Tel-Tru fit in the original WSM thermometer hole without any modifications? For some reason I haven't been able to find anything on this topic. Thanks in advance!

According to the specs on Amazon, the BQ300 has a 1/2" NPT base which requires a 7/8" hole.
I doubt the stock thermometer has a base that large.
A step bit on low speed will allow you to enlarge the hole with minimal damage to the surrounding porcelain.

If you do decide to drill use some blue painter's tape over the whole area including the hole. This will protect the coating and keep it from cracking.
