When I first started, I used it, mainly because I didn't know any better. It's what my dad did, and his dad, etc,etc,etc... Then I tried the newspaper bit, but with the charcoal I use, it just didn't take as well as I had hoped. Now, I use the starter cubes. I also use less charcoal in the chimney, so I am sure if I went back to newspaper, I would have teh same luck, but at least with the cubes, I am getting something consistent.

I use paper towel with oil. I always have both on hand.
And by always of course I mean half the time
