It looks like hickory to me.

Is the wood heavy/light for its size. Maybe if you could sand the end grain and the face grain smooth. Im still going with maple. If you look at the images of bark, it is hard to rule out what it could be buy bark alone.

Looks like oak bark, but the long split grain looks like butternut.

Instead of sanding, more practical would be to shave a small area smooth with a sharp knife on the end grain and face grain for the pictures.

Oak is ruled out without visible rays in the end grain.

The bark looks vaguely like some kinds of cherry, but it's pretty straight......it grew lightening fast whatever it was.....maybe the pecan from my back yard?

If you don't know what kind of wood it is, start it on fire and smell it. May help a bit.
