Time to play "Name that wood"

^^^^^^ the specific gravity is fairly high.


Wow I haven't used that term since high school physics class.

Instead of sanding, more practical would be to shave a small area smooth with a sharp knife on the end grain and face grain for the pictures.
 
Looks like white oak to me. Tight grain. Little to no sap wood. No notches. Grey bark.

Oak is ruled out without visible rays in the end grain.

The bark looks vaguely like some kinds of cherry, but it's pretty straight......it grew lightening fast whatever it was.....maybe the pecan from my back yard?
 
Firewood. Looks like Maple to me.

If you don't know what kind of wood it is, start it on fire and smell it. May help a bit.
