Another Game Hen Project

Wow. That's awesome, Jeanie.

I was about to ask some dumb question about how the feed tweaked the flavors (I've always been curious about this when dealing with egg-laying chickens, too)... but it looks like the flavors really carried through!

You should flash freeze those, as some of us would love to get our grubby mitts on a couple (just for comparison's sake).

Enjoy! Thanks for sharing your process!

I'm also curious about the garlic feed. I mean it makes sense, but I'd be curious to try two birds side by side :p

Great post, Jeanie!

Love that mobile pen deal. You did those chix proud - like Aussie said, they're better off with you than anywhere else.

Nicely done all around! :clap2:

Thank you Marc! Most of the flavor comes from fat, so I add corn for more fat, garlic, ginger and scallions for flavor. Then cook with the skin on. This is the second batch I've raised this way. I like the way they turn out. Kind of like flavoring a pig before butchering for a cookout.
I need to check into how to mail these. lol

Looks like your hens eat better than most of us. Awesome looking cook.

Thanks so much Eads! I treat them as kindly as possible. I think happy, healthy animals make for a good end product.

Awesome post!

Thanks Kanco!

Nice work! As usual...

Thank you Mytmouz! :-D

That is wonderful Jen and I bet those birds are gonna be killer!!!!!!!! I would imagine to get a better piece of chicken .... You would have to be a rooster.....:)..... Well done as usual!!!!!!

Thanks Paul! I know you are familiar with homegrown meat. It's hard to find anything better. Hope you're having a great week! :-D

That is good stuff neighbor.

You can't buy quality like that at the store.

Thanks Neighbor! I like knowing what my animals eat.... also like that they have the best life possible. :thumb:

“Mine” :-D

Really cool.
lol Thanks Adams! The "Mines" were flowing that day. I think campfires, fishing and cold beer just go together. :biggrin1:

As always Jeanie, you have a simple way of writing a story that really works.

I'm not sorry for the chickenzes. They get a better life with you than they would anywhere else.

Cheers!
Thanks Bill! Great to see you posting again! Welcome back.

So impressive, Awesome post! The meal looks phenomenal!!

Thanks so much!! I love garlic, ginger and scallion. I'm thinking of other flavors but those are my favorite.

It looks a pan of cornbread dressing you fed them! That post is the epitome of farm to table.

It does doesn't it! lol  Thank you Lloyd! Very kind of you.

Thanks Nick! The garlic, ginger and scallion are my favorites. The more fat on the birds the better, but cooking with the skin on makes the flavoring more pronounced. This was my second batch, the first one was a success so I had to do it again.

Outstanding Looks and sounds awesome I remember the chicken plucker
Thanks George! That plucker was the best 40 bucks I've ever put together. lol Made it from "stuff" around the farm but heck, it works! :p

Great post, Jeanie!

Thanks Greg!! Don't let your son see this! lol I'm sure he loves his hens and would not think of eating one. :becky:
The pen works well. The last one I built was destroyed in the ice storm a year or so ago. Had to make another one. They love being able to chase bugs and I move them around from shade to shade.
You need to try this!
Thanks again...

Awesome post, Jeanie. Did you have any varmint troubles with them? Do you put them inside at night?

Thanks Gary! I had to keep an eye out. The coyotes have been bad lately.
I put them up at night. I put some wheels on the pen that I salvaged off of an old air compressor. (the one I stole parts off of for the chicken plucker) Then wheeled the pen into a barn at night.
The birds stayed under the heat lamp until feathered out and then I moved them to the pen. They took about 5 weeks to reach the 2lb mark.
Thanks again Gary! Hope you're having a great week!

Oh he's thinking of eating 'em! He decided not to name them.

We''ve been putting out in the yard during the weekend days with an old pen we used for when our dogs were pups. They sure do like getting after the bugs and clover and whatnot. The chix are getting bigger and could probably use a little more space, so your idea looks like it'd be a great way to go!

 Great idea on not naming them! Keep me posted if he decides to fry one up! :biggrin1:

That's awesome Greg... Good use of the dog pen. Bet they are loving those bugs! :biggrin1:
I used pvc and chicken wire, built 4 panels, then attached the wire to the frame with hog rings. I made panels so I can take it apart when not needed. The wheels on one end help a lot for moving it from shade to shade. I just pick it up on one end and the back end "rolls" along where I want it to go.
The chicks got used to following my feet. lol

Keep me posted on how the "fried chicken" decision goes! :becky:

Girl, your combo of camping and cooking is the highest form of living. Thanks for sharing. I was especially glad to hear the Coors Light was flowing. Any chance I could convert you to a Shiner drinker?
