You did a great job on the bird! Especially for it being your first using the big easy! I think they say in the instructions to cook a 16lb or less bird but as you experienced you can get bigger ones in there. If you ever want to do one that size again you can take the basket out and use the rod style stand that goes through the turkey and supports it used with the oil type fryers. You'd probably have to truss the turkey though but you wouldn't have the basket restricting you. Some people like that stand on any turkey better than the basket as LanceM88 pointed out in post #42.
I'm glad it worked out for you and your family!

I found that out after the fact... LOL . . Who reads instructions... LOL  The 24 pound bird looked like it was wearing a metal corset busting out of the cage, but as it cooked it shrunk in diameter. All turned out great......

I'll look at the rod style stand, but in all honesty, I could have done well with a 16 pound bird, I just like to cook for the current and vac-seal a future meal (or two) all with one single cook.

IAMM,

That's right. TBE is rated for a 16 lb bird. I've done an 18lber in mine. I normally subtract a lb from stated weight because of giblets, neck, gravy pack etc. They do make a bigger version called a 3 in 1 that does more and holds a bigger bird but I like the original. You bird looks Great!

I too looked at the 3-in-1, but with overall design and features, I liked the simplicity of "The Big Easy"

All these birds look great! It was hard for me to change over from frying at first...until the next time I priced peanut oil. ;D

I too have put the thought of a fryer off my want list, not only for the fact of safety, but the bird was simply delicious!!!

Even if I didn't want it for the fry effect, just using it to free up oven space is more than a reason/justification to use the "The Big Easy"

Thanks again AClarke44 and Toast for helping me make this choice which produces a great Thanksgiving Bird. Next year there will be no reason to put a bird in the oven, just one in the smoker and one in "The Big Easy". This will give us more room for the sides instead of playing musical pans...

I plan to try some roaster chickens in the near future, so I'll be looking at accessories like the rod stand AClarke44 mentioned...

I did a 22lb in my 3-in-1...turned out great. Forgot to take a nice picture when it was done, but one of my guests did snap a quick one on their phone before I cut it up.

Also trying to up my bird carving game what with new Son In Law coming to town and all:

Someone mentioned using their turkey frying stand instead of the basket. I may give that a try if it works but the basket keeps the bird from touching the sides of the SS cook chamber. But if it were trussed it might work.

Also pan options for the Big Easy

I ordered several different pans and they arrived yesterday, I tried a fitting before I clean the dust off of "The Big Easy". I figured I should try both sizes and see which size fits best.

The 1/4 size 2" steam table pan fits perfectly inside the tray, but volume is still limited....

I also found that a 1/3 size 4" deep pan will replace the pan holder altogether and give you a deeper pan.

And for those who like disposable pan options, they make 1/3 size 4" deep foil pans that will nest nicely inside the stainless steel 1/3 size steam table pan.

In the end, I like the 4" deep 1/3 size pan. It rests directly on the floor and completely replaces the pull out tray. You can also insert the foil pans inside the stainless pan for a no-clean situation. Some have said that just the foil pan will work by itself, but I like the idea of a strong sturdy pan when carrying hot drippings. It's like having extra insurance....

I've got a 15 lb fresh turkey going on my new 3 in 1 , SRG or whatever you want to call it :)

just got it last week during the amazon sale and cooked 2 large roast chickens so far . Very impressed ! they were both crispy on the outside and moist and flavorful on the inside .

what impressed me most besides the quick cooking time was how moist the white meat was yet the inside thigh meat was fully cooked to perfection .

can't wait for my first turkey today

cheers , Woody

That's the magic of infrared. Sounds like the 3 in 1 will do them as good as TBE. :thumb:

will upload pics later , but..... a 15 lb turkey doesn't stand up in the large bge , it pretty much sits flat on the bottom :)

guessing you'd need a 25-30 lb bird to stand up in the basket :)

Someone posted that they use this in the basket of The Big Easy to stand smaller birds up to 15 pounds.
