Let me explain what I mean.

Apple, for instance, is a choice of wood we have to smoke something. But are there specific types of apple wood available for purchase to use?

In other words, the bags of wood simply say "apple". But is there, for instance, a "Braeburn apple" or a "Granny Smith apple" or a "Fuji apple" wood?

Or does it not really matter?
 
I can't imagine that different named varieties of apple trees would make wood that tastes any different.

I have used apple and pear wood and can't tell a difference. Same with peach, nectarine, plum, apricots.

People claim different oak varieties have significant differences, but I can only tell a tiny difference between red and white, but there are hundreds of species of each oak type. Some people claim that post oak, or California live oak taste different. I can't tell anything between these varieties
