I watched the episode where Michael asked about Alabama white sauce. It looked like someone from KCBS told him it was against the rules. Did I miss something?

I thought that is what the (now former) CEO said. I was scratching my head and asking if I heard correctly.

I've been enjoying the newest, "keep BBQ interesting" show, but still can't get over the way cooks think of us BBQ judges!
Still talking, and fussing about garnish, (I hardly even check legality anymore since garnish is sooooo far off my radar!)
"We have to select the most evenly sized thighs", equal size is not an appearance scoring factor in any category.
Alabama white chicken? "Oh my God no! Judges want sweet tomato-based sauce"! Judges don't WANT anything, judges score what you put in front of us, period! If you think you've got a killer Alabama white sauce and the contest is in Midwest Iowa, GO FOR IT!! We will judge it regardless. That being said, a lot of judges talk about lack of new ideas and flavors (Blues Hog!).
I would not have a problem with Alabama white sauced wings, you might be surprised!!!!

If only one or two cooks use Alabama white sauce, would that not be akin to marking your box?

I have thoroughly enjoyed the show too. I feel like Michael Symon is a really good host. I've liked him in most shows I've watched. I also feel like some of the cookers are willing to tell a little more on this show versus others.

Didn’t a brethren say he was in next weeks episode? I don’t think he was a featured team but he hit top 10 in something. Been kinda itching to watch that episode.

I think the show is great. And, more importantly, my wife does too. I feel they took the first season of bbq pitmasters and made it better. I’m not a comp guy or a judge but this makes me ponder the backyard comps more and more.

Here's the post.

There have actually been a few Brethren teams featured, some are not really active currently, probably because of all of the cooking and traveling. On this past week's episode from Alabama, I saw a lot of teams place that I cook with regularly and a few were shown walking up to get awards.

No more so than one or two teams cooking legs, even if a judge new a team was turning in legs, there is no way to know if 3 or 5 other teams turned in legs.
If my pal Bob told me he is turning in white sauce, I'm the only judge that would know this, and I can't say anything during judging so one judge is not going to make that big of an influence.
Or better yet just don't try to cheat!!!

I know it's not who you were referring to, but Brad from Gettin' Basted was in a recent episode. He's a relatively frequent poster in the Competition forum.

I really like the show, but is it me, or does the brisket turn ins look ………less than desirable? I’m a central Texas kind of guy with brisket and love the bark with the rendered fat….the turns in on the show that I have seen look like brisket slices from arbys or subway (no rendered fat, no bark whatsoever)…is that indicative of these kinds of contests? (I’ve never competed before)

Every comp brisket I've ever seen a pic of, is that color.

Doesn't even look appetizing to me.

They completely edited out the calls for ribs on last nights episode. I can only guess it was because none of the featured teams did well in that category. I must admit I was disappointed not to get on air.

So question for the current CBJs & comp cooks. Are the entries still so sickly sweet as they were 10 years ago? I've been a backyard cook for years and became a CBJ 10 years ago. But after about 3 or 4 comps, I couldn't deal with the sweetness of every single entry and never judged again. Every entry tasted like SBR or BHO, I just couldn't do it. Have the teams moved on, or is it still more of the same?

I was looking for you and the next thing I knew, the ribs were completely passed over in the second round.

That's been one of my complaints about the show. I understand they are following just a few teams for each episode and only have so much air time, but it feels pretty s#!+ to skip over an entire category of awards because one of the teams you're following didn't get a call. In one of the earlier episodes, one of the teams finished 2nd overall - and I'm pretty sure they didn't even call the 1st place team's name!

What my wife noticed, so i had to rewind, was that they had called top 12 in chicken to get a featured team in, when normally seems only top 10. And on second day completely skipped rib calls.

While we enjoy the show this was the first one that just seemed "off" a tad. I am not complaining, just wish they would have been more consistent with this episode and have shown rib calls or at least names.

kinda bummed for you. Wife and I were looking for your rib call, and they just left out rib calls day 2.

congrats on the call though!
