I have been at two KCBS contests where a judge was wearing blue nitrile gloves while judging. At one the contest rep told the judge they could not wear gloves as the meat is presented to their hands. At the other contest, the contest rep had no problem with a judge wearing gloves while judging.
Your thoughts? Should judges wear gloves while judging barbecue?

If I had to guess as to why the judge was using gloves it is most likely due to the massive amounts of sauce that teams are putting on their product.
Being a judge myself when it comes to chicken and ribs I know that it is best have a lot of paper towels handy.

I agree....

So, how about sticking with the topic? :-D. There is a whole other thread about the use of sauce in KCBS.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled topic...

I don't see how a judge wearing gloves could possibly impact the scoring. We already have 'rules' about not licking your fingers, so maybe if a judge wants to wear gloves, they should change them between meats?

Thank beautiful 7 pound 6 ounce baby Jesus!

Unless they are powdered, but that is an obvious one to point out, but I agree.

Party Pooper.

There is no rule about licking your fellow judges fingers... just sayin'. :hungry:

I have judged a lot of SCBA events in the past and I like to feel the pull factor of pork butt and brisket. Maybe gloves would affect the feel, I don't know.

Another thought, if someone has a skin problem or some other problem with the sanitation of his hands, I would prefer if he wore gloves......or stayed at home.

People who aren't used to them or have not been trained are generally more unsanitary than those who don't because the gloves give them a false sense of security resulting in a casual attitude. Besides it's not in the procedure to wear gloves so it's freelancing. It needs to stop.

Actually, the use of food grade gloves is not a bad idea. Being a judge/competitor/restaurant owner/et al, I would appreciate this gesture as it makes it easier to get the sample without contaminating the others in the box; makes it simpler to clean up after each round; eliminates the use of wet wipes which CAN affect the taste buds and shows an understanding of food safety and judging.

I, for one, cannot figure out why this would be a bad idea. Any help would be appreciated!

That's like putting on a condom after sex
