Hi All Is Mulberry wood good for smoking. Is it like any other kind of wood IE hickory/pecan? Mostly smoking butts and ribs here.
Thanks DanB

Mulberry

Hi All Thanks for the fast replies What other woods would you compare Mulbery too?
Did a Google search on Mulberry wood, some compare it to apple?

To me the smoke from mulberry smells like cotton candy :-D I use it as an accent wood, not as the main source of smoke.

@Ron_L, I hate to hijack a thread, but can you educate a newbie on 'accent' wood? Do you smoke with one wood, then accent with it at the end, or do you mean naked and just a touch at the end?

Sorry, cant contribute to Mulberry wood, but am interested in the responses.

Happy to hear that so many say it's a good smoking option considering the birds seem inclined to give me an endless supply of the stuff.

I have some that I've cut down in recent years when I let the trees get too large, but I've never smoked with it. One thing I've heard in the past is that it's a real dense/wet wood that takes a long time to cure well? How long are those of you that smoke with it keeping it before burning?

I've used Mulberry as the cooking wood and as chunks with charcoal cooking. It's pretty neutral and can be used for anything in charcoal.

Using in a stick burner it burns hot and fast.

It's a mild fruit wood. I burn small trimmings for grilling coals and it works great--must have some decent BTU capacity.

Same here! They grow like weeds.

The berries are sweet, but not a whole lot of flavor.

I did chunk some up, but left in in a plastic bag so it got moldy on me. I have a bunch that need to come down so maybe this spring I'll get some seasoning.

Mulberry is a very fine primary or secondary smoking wood. I have nearly a cord on hand, and enjoy using it often. Excellent flavor.

In addition to being a good mild smoke wood, mulberry is pretty high up on the btu charts, similar to most oak species and it seasons much faster than oak. Mulberry goes into the section of my wood piles that is reserved for the coldest winter nights.

At least a year. Funny story: Back when I was still splitting with a maul, I got the gift of about a rick+ of fresh mulberry. I had to go out to a tree-cutter's wood lot to get it. I cut it to size (I like 16" pieces). Filled my trailer at the expense of my back; man, that stuff was heavy. And dripping with sap. Getting home, I decided to give it a go with the maul to see how it split. Using an 8 pound maul, I hauled off and gave it a mighty whack. The sharp edge cut into the top 1/4" of the log. Thinking maybe I needed a little extra, I gave the thing a full round-house blow, and this time it sank in about 1/2". I decided at that point to take up a buddy's offer, so leaving the load on the trailer, I trucked on down the road and submitted that yeller wood to his hydraulic splitter. Piece of cake! About a month later, a bright red, shiny, new splitter became part of my BBQing equipment. Never had even a moment of second guessing on my purchase, since.

Not sure how well dry mulberry would split, but I'm guessing that if you let the logs sit (covered) for a coupla years, they might dry out enough to split. Maybe. Best bet is to get 'em split right away, then let 'em season.

Get as much as you can! I use Mulberry all the time, it is a light flavor similar to apple, great stuff!
