Well, I made my basket out of expanded metal, wrapped around a propane tank as a form. I pilfered a metal handle off of a 5g plastic bucket.

Like mentioned, 5 gal bucket handle. I prefer to keep my basket as light weight as possible. When full, it is heavy enough.

a piece of aluminum rod I got at Lowes or Home Depot. Bends easy with a pair of pliers. Then just stuck through the holes on either side of the expanded metal.

I just use a heavy gauge wire bent to fit into the holes in the basket and use it to lift it out and put it back in. I then store it near the UDS for quick retrieval and it is not hot when I need it. Easy peasy!

The handle is just a piece of square steel tube with a hole drilled in it. Since this pic I drilled holes in the pizza pan and removed those extra 2 nuts between the handle and the pan. There's just one nut to remove, and then the handle and pan both come off. Works really great, and the diffuser gives me even temps throughout the whole drum.

I've always wanted to build in a handle, but just been too busy (lazy really). Since I build the UDS I have only bee using 2 wire coat hangers to lift my basket in and out. Easy to use and easily replaceable if needed.

I used a bent-to-shape wire shirt hanger as a temporary solution...that was about 7 years ago! (still going strong!!)

I welded a piece of 1/4" round stock straight across the top off my expanded metal basket. I used the leftover 1/4" round stock and bent up a hook for inserting and removing the basket. I also use the hook to scrape the bottom of the drum when the grease gets built up.

Knew I had a picture somewhere. A dollars worth of 3/16 crap steel from hardware store. I used some 3/8 to bend a hook. I prefer to have a handle on all my pails.

Thanks to you all that are using bucket handle...I've got 20 new 5 gallon buckets for another project and I don't need half the handles. Now I've got a use for 2 of them.
