Hi Brethren,

New fella from the UK and wondering if anyone can help out. I am travelling to Kansas City on the 29th September for a week with my son (57 & 30) primarily to see the "real" BBQ scene, visit the American Royal and watch a couple of the UK teams cook at the show. Booked in to do a KCBS judges class too. However whilst I am no stranger to the US I don't know KC - MO at all. Wondering if any of you guys could give us a guide as to where to go (or not) for good BBQ/food joints, not necessarily for the tourists, just good BBQ, we can also hook up if you want to guide us. Or if any of you comp teams want to show us Brits how its done it would be our pleasure to learn! I will have a car when I am there so we can get about and not lean on anyone, staying in Lees Summit.

Thanks for any advice/help

I can get you started but am not too familiar with Lees summit area and the BBQ around.
http://www.plowboysbbq.com/ is a brethern but I have yet to eat there. Hear it's awesome!
http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com/ This is a favorite for me but also have fond memories of eating there with my father who has since passed so that might play into why I love it so much. It's also a legend around these parts it shouldn't disappoint.
http://www.joeskc.com/ also known as Oklahoma Joes I'm sure you have heard about it great food but comes with a massive line usually. I would suggest order to go and eat in the car and save yourself an hour wait.

Hopefully some others will chime in with more MO places.

Thats Great Thanks!!!!

As you say its a start. I had done a bit Googling and those names came up and they are on the list. I think we want to try Plowboys but just looking for some other joints that the locals know and love that are not too touristy. The reason I ask is that when I was working in Florida there was a great place north of Orlando where the normal UK tourists didn't go, 4 Rivers. The owner (i think) took the time to show me around, showed me how he did things I was there after the lunch and before the dinner rush and it was awesome, Its what got me converted over from Burnt grill offerings that us Brits are so good at. LOL! I saw the Smoke and knew I was in heaven! LOL!

Plowboys is a bit of a ride from the Royal, but that would be my first choice. Todd Johns, the owner is a good friend, a Brethren member, and one heck of a cook!

I wasn't impressed with OK Joe's when I was there, but others seem to like it. If you go to the OK Joe's Lenexa location make sure you go to the Kansas City BBQ Store.

http://www.jackstackbbq.com/ is pretty good and probably worth checking out.

Um, it looks like its 2 miles, or 7 minutes away.

Jack Stacks, I've tried a lot of the local places, hard to find a bad one. For my money it's Jack Stacks, i think there are 3 or 4 locations around he area. One of the few places I've seen lamb ribs, burnt ends are amazing, ribs, brisket, not a bad thing on the menu. I was disappointed in Oklahoma Joe's.

Please....

forget about everything anybody has said so far.....

Q39 is the best bbq in kansas city hands down...

Their Ribs and Burnt ends are absolute heaven, so you must get both when you go.

Check their yelp reviews if you doubt a native kansas citian. Then your mind will be set on going to q39
