I also had a hard time justifying over a hundred bucks for a thermometer. I had several low end ones that would last around a year. I was finally ready to upgrade to something better back in March and began researching options. I found chef’s temp and went that route. It is very fast and was dead accurate when I tested it. I’m using it 3-4 times a week and very happy with it so far.

I’ve never had any issues with Thermapens.
I have two, having just bought the “One” on their “Award Winning Sale”.
I paid $79 for the “One”. A great deal and so far has worked as advertised.
 
Haven't found valid alternatives on this side of the pond; had to go with the Thermapen. Buy once, cry once, after all
