I'm looking for a small sized smoker to add to the collection. I've done the search and the threads are couple years old. I am thinking of picking one up soon as I have been saving the $$$ from not buy Phillip Morris products but have a few questions. I've seen some pics here that show a smoker that looks like 3/16". But it said in the specs that it is 11 ga. metal. 11 ga. to me is still sheet metal (5/64"). So how thick is it?

I looked at the Pecos online and the Oklahoma Joe Longhorn at Lowes and got a chance to "kick the tires".
Price point is negligible.
The Pecos has limited lifetime. Longhorn is 2 years. - Pecos
Pecos - 630ci cook chamber. Longhorn - 751. - Longhorn
Pecos - grate height exhaust. Longhorn - topside. If I were Aaron Franklin - Pecos

Any help in deciding?

I believe the Pecos also has a diffuser plate where the firebox attaches to the smoke chamber and the Longhorn does not.

I put my hands on the Pecos for the first time yesterday at Academy and was impressed.

The nearest Academy is about a million miles away from me so no hands on. How thick do you think the steel is?

Pecos is 14 gauge with 11 gauge doors the Longhorn is not any heavier may be a little bit lighter and door is not heavier Guage. They are about the same size. Longhorn is bolt together while the Pecos is fully welded with Grate level exhaust. Pecos has lid bracing.
I'd get the Pecos.

Thank you. I am really leaning towards the Pecos. From what I read, it does have a learning curve to it so maybe the first cook will be for the M-I-L :)deadhorse:). She either survives or she doesn't. But I will reserve for some more posts.

Too Small - just ask Big Swole.......even after I told him it was too small.......
And it's $100 more, 200 cubic inches extra is on tiny top grate. Add a real top grate to Pecos and it's WAY bigger than Wrangler......

True, main grate is a bit smaller but man, that pecos is pretty thin metal. Here's another pit to consider

10 gauge, 780 ci main grate, exhaust just above grate level. Good reviews too. I dont have any personal experience, just what I've read on this site, and reviews.

I still have nightmares from my bolt-together Brinkmann. That's why I'm leaning toward an Old Country. Way less leaks.

I don't see 10 guage anywhere in specs.? its only 204 lbs.... Pecos says 222 lbs....... Some knucklehead answered 10 gauge in Q/A but it ain't.........10 gauge would be 350 lbs. 14 Guage at best -possibly 16.

It may cook Fine, Longhorn cooks Fine, Pecos cooks Fine. Firebox doesn't look big enough for full size splits...?

Hey Smitty, "If" I grab a Pecos, What mods can you recommend?

rework the fire grate for better ash control (add slots, drill holes or cut out center and put expanded metal, or use the grilling grate in top of FB for fire grate), convection plate or tuning plates. That's it.
