Name the wood

Can anyone identify this type of tree? This is the only pic I have and there are no pics of leaves as they fell off earlier this year. Any help is appreciated.

I agree, the bark looks like oak. It resembles mesquite a little too but I don't think you have any of that where you're at, so I'm going with oak.:-D

I believe it's called rock oak.Thats what it looks like to me!

Might be ash. We have a bunch of ash trees in our yard, some have bark like this and some have "finer" bark. The leaves come in really late and are the first to go.
