I've always used a chimney with newspaper, but never liked all the paper ash flying around.
Now I use sterno instead of newspaper. Does the oil spray help with the ash ???

Usually use the Weber chimney and some of the charcoal bag or newspaper. Weed burner for the big smokers.

Roll 2 whole newspaper sheets into an INCOMPLETE CIRCLE. Place in a chimney aligning the defect in the circle with a hole in the chimney ( improving air circulation). Light the paper. Sit it on a hard surface ( not your wife's outdoor dining table) Wha Lha. Works every time.

If you use paper towell instead of newspaper, you'll have less ash floating around
