Membranes are one of those things that you'll hear different opinions.

Leave it on- it helps retain juices
Score it- it'll shrink and be unnoticeable
Remove it- you're just being lazy if you don't

Reality is probably a mix of all three. It's like beans in chili. Bottom line it's personal preference. To answer your question, yes scoring is a good alternative to removal, IMHO
