Dutch style meatballs

Last night I felt like making some meatballs for dinner, and there's a meatball throw down going on, so why the phark not?



Dutch style aren't too different from regular meatballs, except that they're huge and can be eaten as a main dish.


I didn't get any pics of making the balls, pretty standard stuff there...



  • 1/2 lb each ground cow and pig
  • 2 slices of white bread, crusts removed, dipped in milk
  • 1/2 red onion, finely diced (shallots would be more traditional)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 tsp each: nutmeg, salt, black pepper
  • 2 Tbsp good Dutch mustard
Mixed that all together, then divided into 4 quarter pound meatballs, which were then rolled in flour.


Heat a couple tablespoons of butter in the cast iron skillet, then brown the meatballs on all sides.

Then I added a bit of water and covered the pan for them to simmer for almost an hour. When they were done I removed them to a plate to rest while I made pan gravy and the rest of the meal.


Served with honey-butter peas and a side salad, though more traditionally this would be eaten with mashed potatoes with the pan gravy over everything.

Quarter pound? Why so small? Kidding looks great! Once again, my invite must have been lost in the mail...
