MAK Grills talk/pics/thoughts/reviews and appreciation thread

Lol. Our bad.

Was raining last night, but that didn’t stop us from MAKing some grilled chicken for dinner. Was also able to try another new rub that I recently picked up. FOGO The Rub. This stuff is different if ya haven’t already seen it. One of the ingredients is activated charcoal powder, which causes the rub to be black in color. It’s different in that the meat you cook/serve will be black in color... looking like ya burnt it. That is not the case though. Good stuff :)

Made half the chicken with the FOGO rub and the other half with Oakridge Santa Maria. Oh yeah, my 10 year old daughter insisted on making a peach cobbler. And of course that required me running to the store to grab some vanilla gelato to top it with. Who am I to argue with a 10 year old... lol.

I’m not too sure about a charcoal rub but that cobbler looks heavenly. You have a baker in the house!

What’s wrong, you don’t like black chicken? ;-)

Yes, we do indeed have a baker in the house. I stepped on the scale this morning and will be having a talk with our lil baker. This needs to stop... lol.

So a little late to the game on the MAK grills and after reading thru this thread I think I'm switching from a Komodo to a pellet grill for my next smoker. Looking at MAK's website what's the different between the MAK 1 star and 2 star? They both have the same cooking surface according to the site. What's the $1,000 jump get you with the 2 star vs 1 star?

The side warmer box. The ability to turn the side warmer box into a tall vertical smoker for things that like to hang. The cooker is all stainless (stand is still a powdercoated thing). More rack positions which allows more cooking space. There might be more space above the racks due to the shape of the lid on the 2 star v 1 star but don't quote me on that.

Would love to see you join the MAK family! Both the 1 and 2 Stars are solid performers. Comparing the two, the 2 Star will get ya:

-304 marine grade SS cooking chamber
-Cold smoke/warming drawer
-Funnel Flame Zone as standard equipment
-Lower bottom shelf
-Left and right side shelf’s
-Additional rails allowing for the placement of up to 3 additional upper grates vs 1 upper grate in the 1 Star

You will find that if you start to trick out a 1 Star, you’ll quickly approach 2 Star pricing. Again, both are solid options!

BTW: Your name looks super familiar. Are you a member over at the KK forum? Why do I recognize your name?!?! Are you wanted by the authorities? LOL ;-)

Does the 42 in your name represent the size of your KK?

There is more vertical space in the 2 Star because of the domed lid vs the 45° angles on the 1 Star lid. That said, both still have ginormous capacity for cookers with such a small footprint :)

Ha nope I am a member of a lot of forums but hadn't got around to joining the KK one yet. Bummed I just missed out on the group buy haha but oh well....probably an age old question and I've read thru some of the threads comparing them but what swung you to the MAK over a Yoder?

I live in Ohio and would like to be able to smoke year round so my smoker will get used in colder weather if that matters.

FWIW, I looked at Yoders. The only thing that I didn’t like about them was the possibility of rust and repainting. I wasn’t interested in potentially dealing with that.

Yoder makes an awesome pellet grill. Visually it will need upkeep but mechanically it will last a long time
