While shopping at the Madison Heights Lowes store i decided to check the outdoor cooking area for clearance sales and was rewarded with this.

14 lbs for $5.99

On sale through the weekend. I cook mostly with wood lately so i only grabbed 6 bags, should get me through the winter.

Also saw this

It was $5 off but i passed. Never heard of "center cut" before.

Anyway hope this saves someone some cash :thumb:

Thanks for the heads up, never noticed you were from my neck of the woods

Have used two bags of Stubbs so far in an attempt to avoid the dirty burn of KBB. So far, it's an improvement.

Thanks for the tip...I'll pick up a few bags.

I bought Stubbs earlier in the year...holy white smoke when lighting in a chimney!!

Makes KBB seem clean

Do people use Stubb's with the Minion method reliably? I have gone through a couple bags, but only for grilling in my kettle. And the white smoke output when the chimney was firing-up is pretty crazy for a while. But the reduced ash was awesome.

I haven't tried it with the Minion method before but would like to give it a shot ...

30+ bags at each of the stores around me...I know where we are going when the toddler gets up. So much for the gym. 14 lb deadlifts x 10 or 20 reps will have to do.

Went and got five bags on my lunch break. Should last me to the end of the year.

I used Stubbs for the first time two weekends ago on my kettle for some ribs. I don't recall there being any more smoke while lighting it in the chimney. But it sure did burn long and clean using the minion method. And it smells really good while it burns!

Went to pick some up at lunch today. They only had one bag on the floor and it was busted open, but had a pallet on the top rack. Asked the guy working the area if he could get me some down and was a little surprised when he said yeah, no problem. We got to talking about cooking and he said hey, I think there's a bag busted open down there, but it should be mostly all there. I'll give it to you for a dollar if you want it. So I scored a bonus bag for a buck!

I was randomly at Lowes today and they had the same sale. I didn't need any, but they had a bunch. That price is solid for Stubbs.

No idea what center cut lump is either though? Anyone?

Center cut signifies that the wood scraps they're using to produce the charcoal come from the center of the tree-meaning they're using heartwood- where as the outside of the tree is known as sapwood. Sapwood is lighter, less dense, and burns faster.

Heartwood can be FAR more dense and therefore burn much longer-but it depends on the tree species. In my neck of the woods a white oak tree when it's cut and split is known as Iron Wood if the splits are from the heartwood section-burns forever! It is my sincere belief that Kingsford uses more heartwood than other brands which is why it holds temp slightly longer.

Woods like walnut have very pronounced sapwood vs heartwood.

Here is the sapwood vs heartwood on cherry.

Same here. I had to stop using it as it would take over the yard and the neighbor's yard. Being neighborly I found a cleaner burning, better smelling one but it's only sold at HEB in parts of Texas. I was hoping the new bag meant a new or better product.
