My wife went to the local butcher today to price bone in prime rib for approximately 15 people for Christmas dinner. She was quoted a price of $300 which is way to expensive. It was suggested to go for filet mignon, $120 price cut. I don't want to go with the filet because I don't want to cook it hot and fast in the PBC. I was looking to experiment with prime rib. Is there a cut of beef that is cheaper and I could cook similar to prime rib on the PBC?

While I don't really think anything can really replace prime rib in quality or presentation I might would try top sirloin butt. It's usually well marbled. Or a chuck roast.

Bone out prime rib is selling here locally for $7.99 a pound and really looks great (and a lot cheaper than tenderloin). I'm thinking about going for it myself. You can still reverse sear a tenderloin though.

why not get the whole beef tenderloin and cook it the same way you would do a PR ?

BTW, the quoted price seems outrageously high. For 15 ppl, you'd do fine with an 10-12lb PR. I can't believe that Ribeye is $30 per lb up there.

Agree:
We are getting standing rib roast here for $6.99 per pound. Our 17 pound Christmas roast was $120.00.

Your butcher is off his rocker or there is some misunderstanding I think, you should be able to get the whole ribeye for 6-8 $/lb. I can get a ribeye CAB locally in the cryo for 7.68 a pound last time I checked, about a week ago.

They usually run 16-20 pounds each .........so 160.00 max

Get a whole sirloin, easily serve that many folks, and what you must be paying won't be but a skosh over $195.

A NY strip roast is a very good option. IMO it is easier to do and has a lot more waste than a prime rib and still has great flavor.

I'm on a tighter budget this year and I'm planning on doing a tri-tip. Last time I looked they were really nice looking over at Costco!

Buy choice instead of prime.

Right, this is probably "prime" prime rib, as opposed to "choice" prime rib. Make sure we're talking apples to apples here on prices. You can have different types of USDA grades for the same cut of meat that is called Prime Rib or Standing Rib Roast.

You can have:

Select Prime Rib
Choice Prime Rib
Prime Prime Rib

Not all prime rib is USDA grade "Prime" which a lot of people find very confusing...like myself.

The local Kroger grocery store has USDA Choice Ribeye Roasts on sale for $9.99lb.
