The bottom line is they all do different things. Even the UDS's are different from each other.

I personally like the Swiss Army knife concept....one tool that does lots of things well.

When I first discovered this forum I was looking for the merits of a WSM vs a PBC to see which one is right for me as a noob. After tons of reading I think they both seem like great options and it's a matter of HOW you want to cook.

I come from a lot of guitar forums and people go nuts and get passionate about small details when the end of the day the end result is what's important. I don't see what all the hate is over the PBC it's a cool product. I'm going with whichever I can get first!

Well said. FYI the PBC has been in a 3 to 4 week back order recently. But if decide to go with the Pit Barrel, it is well worth the wait.

To the moderator: sorry about my previous post.

I'm 4 beers into this conversation and just wanted to say I love you guys.
Use what ever works best for you :thumb:
I will say I built my UDS for about $60.00

I'm ruined.....I'm out at my fire pit tonight enjoying the evening and I look at the hot coals and right away my brain is thinking what could I cook off of them.

I came to this site because of the mother of all UDS threads. I was looking at building a UDS or going with the WSM. At the end of the day I went with the UDS because I enjoy building things that I can use and I couldn't justify the cost of the WSM when I can do the same things on both.

It's up to you to decide which one you want to go with. Do you have the tools, time and space (You can't burn the barrel out in an apartment complex) to build the UDS.

Yes, go for it.

No, buy the WSM.

Matt

PBC is about 2 weeks back ordered now. I ordered one on Wednesday and its supposed to ship around the 28th. I ordered it just because I'm intrigued by the ease of use. Plus chicken will probably still be my most cooked item and its supposed to be great on it.

Pictured is PBC Chicken and it's as good as it gets, unless your in a Louisiana family owned diner on a side road eating fried chicken, greens, yams with home made biscuits, and Mississippi Mud Pie-sweet tea.

That's good to hear. Makes the juiciest chicken. Be sure to try their all-purpose rub it's quite good on chicken.

What I get out of this is that it's the cook, not the cooker. To cook a lot of meat, a UDS. To easily buy ready-made, and/or for lesser amounts of meat, buy a WSM. Food cooked well on both tastes great.

How so? They're both metal cylinders :)

Cars are just frames with wheels yet as you can see there's vast differences between them.

Seriously though Weber makes good products but the smokers are designed to do one thing which is smoke because their bread and butter is in grills. No way they'd ever design one to do both because they'd be cutting their own sales.

I don't know why we're even discussing this - we're Brethren. That means arguing about the differences is pointless. At some point we'll buy a wsm, pbc, and build a drum and have all three anyway. :becky:

I have several cookers and not one of them is a wsm, pbc or a uds. I have no desire for any of them. I do have a 1/4" vertical smoker that was designed like a wsm, pbc and a uds.

I have to admit, Ive seen some pretty cool UDS's, but for me I'm really liking my 22.5 WSM! I've about "pimped" it to the max! I think they're just down right sexy!

I would ask the WSM People, have you had your WSM going for 20+ hours on one load of fuel? I'm a weber fan boy through and through, 6 or 7 kettles of various sizes now (don't tell the wife). For the money I spent, the UDS is the best bang for the buck hands down.
I have had a 22.5" do 20hrs did a 16hr butt at 235 then just allowed it to keep going just for kicks. It could have kept going but I had to put it away. Granted this was in ideal conditions, full charcoal basket (kbb), no wind, very hot day, night temps were above 75F, and i didnt have a water pan.
