Called a local metal retailer today. Quoted me $266, tax included for a 4x10 sheet of quarter inch of mild steel....last sheet I bought was 4x8 quarter inch...swear I only paid like $130 for it....

Sounds like a decent price for retail. A quick check on metals depot and they want $312 for 4 x 10.

Actually not to bad at $6.65 per square foot. I usually budget and quote at $8.00 per square foot for 1/4" plate. I need to drive about 180 miles round trip with truck-n-trailer to get steel in quantity at a decent price and build those costs and taxes into my budget/quotes.
What state are you in? Which retailer?
