I know there was a post a while back about olive oils.

Since the search is kind of busted right now, which brands do the experts recommend?

I see Everyday California has some really good REAL olive oil. Any others??

I use Bragg. Seems like a good value. Great taste.

Well, it appears the BI-LO near me carries California Olive Ranch products.

I'll have to go check. Will report back but keep the suggestions coming.

California Olive Ranch all I use at the moment. A lot of fraud in the foreign olive oil markets. My recommendation would be to stick with US olive oil from Texas and California. They are producing great oils that are hard to beat. I love olive oil.

I suspect Trader Joe's olive oil comes from California. Shorter time from harvest to market.

In Europe, there is a tremendous amount of fraud with olive oil in various ways. This is especially true in Greece and Italy. It's estimated that well over half the olive oil you buy is not actually olive oil. The labeling also is fraudulent. For instance, most of the Italian olive oil comes from olives in Spain and Africa, and a great deal of what is sold as olive oil is watered down (if you can use that expression) or not even from olives. I believe the Spanish olive oil is more legit. At least, they haven't been caught as much. I've read several articles on this. They are now testing olive oils and I recall reading that Kirkland (Costco brand) was legit, if that is any help, otherwise, I think it is a crapshoot, unless you're buying from the source. The mark-up on this stuff is insane. There are a few Spanish brands that I love around $10/liter in Spain. Unfortunately, I can't find them here for under $40.

Pat, the simple answer is if you can buy direct from a certified and trusted producer there, do that. Freshness is king.
The next safest option guaranteed that you are getting the highest pure grade Olive Oil in the world is to buy Australian.
Australia has the highest regulatory standard and our climate ensures fantastic oil.
Companies like Colivita and so on, big producer OO companies, they cannot get the quantity needed for their production size and thats why they have been successfully sued, both there in The USA and here.
I wouldn't buy Greek or any European OO in a pink fit.

The lawsuit, which seeks class action status, targets 10 major olive oil brands, including Bertolli, Filippo Berio, Carapelli, Star, Colavita, Mezzetta, Pompeian, Rachael Ray, Mazolla and Safeway Select. It also names 10 major supermarket chains and big box stores that allegedly marketed substandard oil under the extra-virgin banner, based on covert testing done by the law firm, Callahan said.

This part of the article worries me because it doesn't make sense that the testing done here results if a very large statistic of problem European products, and that there were a high amount of reports years ago of the Olive Oil council (European) making offers and threats to our producers and boards trying to get Australia to um..."relax" our standards, shall we say.
Hoping that is not the case there!
The North American Olive Oil Association, which represents most olive oil importers, has conducted tests on its imported products and found problems with only 1 percent of samples, according to its president, Bob Bauer.

I could also discount the link you posted from the Huffington Post.

It still remains a fact. Check the awards, but more importantly the World Olive Oil Council says so and has done for 11 years now.

Also heard the Aussie's make a great olive oil.

To be honest, it is the harshness of the soil and the dry heat that makes us lucky, that and the fact that our government finally did something positive by letting the industry implement extremely rigorous standards and testing.
If only they would take the handcuffs off our other industries like cheese and so on.
Why are governments, no matter which party gets in, so bloody corporatist minded???
It totally screws the rest of the population and the nationals productions.
