So I am taking the GF to see my daughter who is recovering from transplant surgery. I have been to SAT a few times and the last couple this late summer-fall to be with the daughter for her surgery. Unfortunately I only had time to get take out and hospital food while there. The other times I was in town was for meetings and of course you are limited in how much you can do with the schedule at hand.
This time I want to sample some of the better fare and I prefer to go to places the locals like and not the tourist traps.

I do plan on making the trip to Lockhart to hit the trinity. I doubt I will go to Franklins and such due to the crowds and wait times. Any advice on when/how to plan my Lockhart visit?
Any recommendations on places in and around San Antonio? We will be staying on the northeast side of town. I have some advice from other forums but figured this should be the place I ask.

Thx in advance

It has been Many years since I was in San Antonio so bear that in mind.

Mi Tierra in the Mexican Market was good. It's family owned and there are several locations(different names) in town including another one in the market and one on the North side of town.

Rudy's by Sea World was good they day we were there. I've heard it varies.

City Market in Luling was good and worth the trip.

If you are into history the San Antonio Mission Trail is worth seeing if you have the time.

I'd suggest pre-ordering Franklin's Q but the minimum is 5 lbs and Brisket is $34 a pound. I arrived once at 7:45 and was only ~10th in line for the 11:00 opening.

There are a number of other good places around Austin and San Antonio. The Texas Monthly list is always helpful. Those I have sampled include; Snows in Lexington (Sat only), Black's in Lockhart, City Market in Luling, Mueller's in Taylor. In Austin itself are Franklins, La Barbecue, Terry Blacks, Interstellar (#2 in Tx Monthly), Lamberts.

You just can't go wrong.

There is plenty of great BBQ in and around San Antonio that you wouldn't have to go to Austin or Lockhart unless you want to see the historical buildings.

Pinkertons and 2M in San Antonio are fantastic and the Burnt Bean 40 minutes outside of San Antonio in Seguin is the best bbq joint on the planet and I've been to them all! lol
