with all due respect I believe your totally unreasonable and owe Chelsea an apology.

it's a luxury product. to get it on location you'd have to wait 5 hrs. what's 5 hrs of your time worth? a plane ticket....hotel?

is it a gimmick. yes. ripoff. maybe. but the market has obviously spoken or the price would come down. it's like saying athletes and actors are over paid. not if the owners and studios are making shmoney.

your outrage is totally uncalled for. the problem with people today is they are always worried about the next guy. dont be mad that you can't afford that nice thing, others can. dont be mad that this business can get $250 to ship a brisket (by your estimate not mine) instead focus on you and what makes you happy. it shouldn't be the downfall of others which is what I see you want to happen here

I think it's great that these logistics/shipping companies exist that can deliver a boutique, small market food item anywhere you want. Of course that service is going to cost a lot of money. How great is it that we can access Franklin's brisket from SoCal and I can order it sitting at home in my underwear? Or get donuts from... I don't know, I don't eat donuts, some famous little donut shop in Wisconsin or New York or something. And get the food fresh? Amazing to me.

Would I ever order it? Nah, I don't think I would. I'm glad the option exists for people, though!

My wife: "why the fark are you sitting in your underwear eating brisket and donuts?"

Me: "......um...."

While I agree that is a lot of money for a brisket, I don't think it's as simple as you're making it out to be. That 4.5-5lbs is the cooked weight for a 8-9 pound brisket that was trimmed down from a 14ish pound brisket. Franklin currently charges $34.00/lb for brisket at their restaurant.

Figure 5lb brisket and the meat alone is $170.00/brisket as the base cost. That leaves $80.00 for goldbelly, shipping, and packaging/handling. While high, that doesn't seem as exorbitant as the initial sticker shock may make you feel

I kind of agree with this. But that said, $34/lb is a lot to pay for brisket regardless if its cooked or not. Especially in TX where brisket usually has the cheapest prices in the US.

Supply and demand is a wonderful thing when left to work on its own without artificial external interference (illegal regulatory).

I agree with you 100%. Having said that, anyone is free to respectfully express their outrage, no matter how valid or or ridiculous it is.

My Fathers Quote “ To a Rich man it’s Cheap, To a poor Man it’s expensive “ So the question is ..Are you a Cheap Rich Man or a Rich Cheap Man, Some Chinese made that up.
I say, just go to Sonny’s and get the Grand Slam for 20 bucks and Get Franklin to pour his sweat on it,

Good amount of ignorance on this thread. Don't knock it till you've tried it. Can't beat the real experience but $250 is way cheap than a trip to TX. If you've had his brisket you'll just fork over your money. It's that good.

This is kinda what I was thinking. "No kidding? Only $250 and I don't have to deal with going to TX? hrmm...." It's not going to be on my monthly menu, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than a vacation.

And, it's been ages since my Franklins visit-but the LEFTOVER brisket was still better than anything else I have had prior or since.

....

If I want an experience I'll go to DisneyWorld where I can get a great meal for $250

Maybe things have changed since the kids were young, but I have never heard "great meal" and "DisneyWorld" uttered in the same sentence before. While you could drop $250 in food and beverages for a family of four, nothing that I ever had was memorable in a good way.

Goldbely offers a great service at a price. I recently ordered a dozen NY bagels through them for a dear friend who never ate one and it was over $100 delivered. He loved them. Totally worth it to me. This morning I went to my local west coast Einstein Bagels and got 13 warm ones for $7 with their Monday special. I'm okay with that, too.

Doesn't Franklin charge like $35/lb for his brisket at the restaurant so that would be $175 for 5lbs and then $75 for next day shipping. The only beef here :-D is that Gold Belly is overcharging on shipping by about $40.

I ordered some Katz' deli to be delivered to me from NYC to the Bay Area in CA last year. It was not cheap, but my family and I ate the meal reminiscing of our trip to NY a few years ago. Worth every penny.

Goldbelly has overhead to sort out all the logistics and have a customer service department to handle all the problems. Franklin charges $34/lb. That's $170 for the brisket. Say $30 for shipping and packaging (ice packs, boxes, etc). That leaves $50 for Goldbelly. That's 20% of the total, which is considered a good tip when receiving excellent service at a restaurant. Seeing as a full brisket from one of the top BBQ places in the world is being delivered to my doorstep 1/2 way across the US. Doesn't seem that unreasonable.

I would rather pay $250 for the brisket shipped to my home verses driving to Austin and stand in line for hours. That just my opinion though. Mad Scientist BBQ has a video on this and would be a good idea to watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AA2wkiDI8bg

I have to agree with this. Austin isn't a very far trip for me, but I'm not standing in line for hours for any 'que. Folks say it's a great experience, and maybe it is for them, but it's not how I want to spend my time.

I have not been to Disneyland, the original in Anaheim , CA, since I was 14 and asked to leave and never return, yes I was eightysixed from Mickeytown**. My Neighbor and his wife go to Disneyworld twice a year, I asked why, he said the restaurants. Apparently goofy and the gang have upped their culinary game.

** Of course there is a story there.

Good morning.

As a service to all members, I give you the following true story.

On Saturday I decided to try and order a brisket from Franklin's place. I learned that they work with a company called Goldbelly. Apparently, Goldbelly handles shipping for several dozen food companies, Franklin being just one of many. I click on "brisket" and they are charging - now hold onto your tongs everyone - $249 to ship a 5-pound brisket!!! I could drive to Memphis and get an entire brisket from the Rendezvous for less money. Being a New Yorker, I had to contact them to see if dementia had finally kicked in. Below is the verbatim (abridged) email exchange I had with Chelsea from Goldbelly.

Me: I want to be sure i am reading your order page correctly. I am looking to purchase the Whole Brisket + Texas Barbecue BBQ Sauce, which I know is currently sold out. Per your website, it states 4.5-5 pounds for $249. Am I reading its right? You are charging $249 for a 5-pound brisket? If this price is correct, how the hell do you have the gall to charge a price that is short of criminal?

Chelsea: Thanks for reaching out and sharing your thoughts. We've been in business for over 7 years now, and many of our customers know shipping can be expensive. Shipping perishable food across the country next day air is even more so! We fight hard to get the shipping rates down as much as possible, but unfortunately, an overwhelming majority of that markup goes into shipping fees (directly to UPS and FedEx) and packaging costs to keep the items cold.

But more than that, the food we're offering isn't just something you can walk into your local supermarket and purchase. For many of our customers, the taste of what we offer is connected to a memory of theirs. Maybe they had an amazing trip to NYC and ate at Ess-a-Bagel every day. Maybe it was a bite of BBQ that they had on a trip to Texas when they were in college. One of our
customers from California told us how they used to go to Sarge's Deli every week with their grandfather when they were young and biting into that pastrami on rye brought a tear to their eye thinking back on the memories.

We love food and are super thankful we get to help people explore the tastes they've always heard about or have always wanted to try. If you enter the code HOTGRILLSUMMER at checkout, you'll receive $15 off of a qualifying order (expires 9/15/21). A lot of the merchants associated with us also add BOGO and other sales to their items - keep watch for those over time. Please don't hesitate to let me know if there's anything I can do to help along the way.

Me: The shipping argument doesn't hold water. I order from Wild Fork. I get a 12-pound brisket, a rack of ribs, porterhouse and tuna steaks shipped to me here in NY. total cost $13.95

I have a 12-bottle case of wine shipped from Napa - the total cost is $19.95.

No 5-pound brisket is worth $249. How much does it actually cost to ship a 5-pound item to NYC? Well, I checked. To ship a 5-pound package from NYC to Kansas City, via USPS is $25.95. Two-day delivery. So even if you choose this method with dry ice, if that is how you ship it, the total wouldn't exceed $30.00. That means I am paying $220 for a 5-pound brisket. LMAO.

My guess is that 50% of the $249 goes right into your pocket. The other 50% goes to Franklin BBQ

Please remove me from your email list. You guys are a major ripoff.

They replied saying thank you for your email and you have been successfully unsubscribed.

I post this because I want to make others aware of just how blatantly this company is ripping people off. I don't care how good a brisket or any other food item is, there is no way on the world anyone should charge the prices they are charging. None. I ask that you re-post this as you see fit so that folks like us aren't taken advantage of by companies such as Goldbelly.

What type of response from Chelsea did you expect to get from what you sent? Were you expecting someone in customer support to send their full business model to a non professional inquiry like the one you sent??

Seems like you were just amped because someone kicked your gerbil/jonas bros cd collection/tofu burger and needed to take it out on anybody.

They are not ripping anyone off. They are offering a very desirable and well known premium product at a premium price. It's up to you to decide whether or not it is a product you will buy, but no one is holding a gun to your head.

Franklin's ain't Walmart. They survive on perceived quality, not price.
