I was picking up a couple of filets at my favorite meat market (a real butcher shop in the back of a grocery store selling only prime & wagyu beef and heritage pork), and took a look at their tri-tip in the case; offered as prime at their usual prime tri-tip price, less than half what they charge for prime ribeye/picanha/strip/filet.

The few they had in the case looked more like they had come from the land of the rising sun so I grabbed one and got a chance to grill it over some wood coals with some SPOG, Santa Maria style last night - the vast majority of my cooking these days begins with starting a fire, either in my smoker or grill.

Witness the marbling I got on the (relatively) cheap. The sliced-off piece is unseasoned for the spoiled, furry, 4-legged member of the family.

Enough with the blabbing, here are the pics.

It turned out better than OK; my wife (who’s not normally prone to hyperbole) made its awesomness the main topic of dinner conversation.

The only Tri-Tip I've had with that level of marbling was some SRF Americian Wagyu Tri-Tip from Huntington Meats in the LA Farmer's Market quite a few years ago. It was absolutely exquisite!

Yours looks to be along those lines, and the cooked product seems like it really delivered. If I still lived in LA I'd get the name of that place from you and be headed over there right now...

Absolutely killer! Dying to know how much you paid per pound for those beauties…

$17.99 - it’s $38.99 usually for the other prime good stuff there.

^^^ that and where exactly did you get it?

Alexander’s Prime Meats in Howie’s Market in San Gabriel.

Your dog eats better than I do

:-D

He eats better than *I* do too! If I’m not cooking, my wife will cook him some beef/pork/chicken/fish - he gets a hot, home-cooked meal every night.

It’s a long drive from Tennessee! If it helps, they carry SRF too, also dry-aged and wagyu for when I’m feeling spendy.

I do miss a few things from SoCal food and scenic wise. I did buy a LOT of killer beef at the Ralph's in Porter Ranch, usually Tri-Tip. If you want good beef filet at a great price, Danny's meat market in Van Nuys is the bomb:

Go Thursday before the weekend rush. Ungraded filet that was often prime+. For example:

That’s some really nice marbling for filet, going to have to check Danny’s out. It’s a little farther than my usual meat radius, but not by much and will be worth a few extra minutes in the car if I can get high quality meats & save some cash.
