How to clean my gateway?

Have read that the best way to clean out a gateway drum is to buy the Members Mark grill/fryer/oven spray (samsclub). I have tried many times to buy from the states but it’s a rule that says no liquid is allowed to ship overseas. At least not this kind of liquid.

Have tried the best cleaner there is to buy here I Norway but with no success.

It does not give any bad smell or taste. It’s just very sticky ( seems to be sticky oil or whatever).

Another question I have is: It seems to rust a little at the bottom. What should I do? I’m afraid that it might rust through:(

Can anyone help me out here?

I never really "clean" my drum. Just scrape, dump, wipe out and then re-season.

To protect the bottom I keep mine on three bricks/pavers to avoid sitting in/on moisture.

Why would you Clean it? :twitch: Dump Ash out , Rinse with water hose, Done. If build up gets thick enuff to flake off on your food - then scrap it or burn it out and reseason. Rust is gonna happen in bottom - paint or coatings will always get burnt off........ Best way to keep it from Rusting Out prematurely is to keep ash cleaned out and raise off ground like Beentown said so it stays dry.

P.S. Fire Cleans damn near anything (Even Alien Goo ) :

I'm a Members Mark person, but I've heard that Zep works good. I'm not sure if you have access to that. Also, DEFINITELY find food grade safe oil-dry for the bottom. I've used it from day one and I've never had rust. I put a little more than enough to cover the bottom.

Good luck!

I do a light rinse on mine every 3-4 smokes, especially when smoking brisket. A little Members Mark and rinse.

Fat can build up on the bottom and a little spark from the fire basket can start a fat fire, seen it.

My clean up is easier than most all UDS smokers. I just drop the side door, clean, rinse and drain.

I always clean grates after each smoke. Soak in Orange, green or purple cleaners, stainless brill pad.

Thanks for all the replies:)

Then it won’t do much as far as cleaning the drum at this point.

Then I might buy a few bricks to put on the bottom but what should I do first with the surface rust? You mention oil but now that it’s already started to rust, what’s the best way to go? We don’t have all these fancy oils and sprays that you have so I would have to find something else if that’s the only to go:)

Really don’t want my gateway to rust more than it already has.

Should the bricks have a gap between them (like a circle so where the rust is will stay dry?) or should they stay close to each other?

Any tips to what I should do with the rust that’s already there?

I might have misunderstood what you meant.
The gateway is not on the ground. It has wheels so I will not be needed that cart.

The surface rust that’s in the bottom of the gateway comes from the moist/fat/drippings++ or when cooking. Should I do something in the bottom of the gateway to prevent it from rust more? The charcoal basket stays right on top of the area where the rust is.

What should I do here to prevent rust through the botttom? That might be the end of the gateway?

Oil Dri or kitty litter in bottom will absorb moisture/drippings. Just dump out after a few uses and cover bottom with it again.

Dose it matter which Kitty litter you get? Will it leave any smell? Will it be a lot of dust? Can you use any other kind of litter/sand?

We dont have oil dry herr in Norway.
