That sucks. I have an acu-rite therm I picked up on amazon a few years ago. It is wireless and has an alarm I can set if the temp goes up in my basement freezer. Works pretty well as a little insurance.
That's a great idea, will definitely look into that. Losing store bought meat is one thing because it is really just money lost. Game/fish is another thing because it can't be replaced. I also also lost 15 pounds of ground beef. My buddy had a bull break a leg so he had to put it down and ended up grinding the whole thing. He gave me the meat because he had so much. I feel bad about that as well because it was very generous of him.

I was in the Express lane, only 3 items
and doing woodwork in the basement my buddy and I dislodged the plug
to the chest freezer.
