The metal side handle on mine today is at 110 deg. with the coals banked there.

Amazing. How big a fire, and what is the outside temp?

The outside temp was in the 40s and the kettle was running at 250 deg.

OK, that makes sense. When I had experience with a kettle with the metal handles[mid 1960's] I never did anything with it but hot grilling sessions. In Florida, with temps more in the 90+ area, usually in bright sun.
