Congrats on all who walked either day!

Congratulations to all who walked! I had a TON of fun there this weekend - competing in the amateur contest on Saturday and judging on Sunday. It is always cool to see brethren flags, banners and shirts at an event.

Congrsrs to all the winners and to those that got calls. Congrats Tim on your first GC!

We will be having a wrap up committee meeting from the contest. I would love to hear your thoughts on Pros/Cons from the contest. I'll present these to the rest of the committee. You can send me a PM if you prefer. Just want to make sure if they aren't doing something right, a chance to correct it and if they are doing it right, keep doing it.

Thanks!

Congrats to all that walked!

Looked like there was some big time competition that was there! With that said, I was surprised when I saw the size of the total purse

Thanks for offering to take our thought to the committee, Scottie... I'll start...

Pros
  • Considering the huge number of teams participating, I think things went well. I'm not aware of any major issues, just a few minor things like a trailer getting hit by a car :-D
  • The idea of getting rid of the "bowling trophies" was a good idea. The spatulas for the Saturday competition were OK, but the jugs and their tie into Westmont history was very nice. Something like that has more meaning than a pig on a stick :-D
  • The reduction of the side categories to one each day was also a good move. Having more side categories than main categories seemed excessive to me.
  • The electric service was rock solid this year, or at least it was where we were.
Cons

  • Ty Warner Park is a great place, but it's not the right venue to hold 70+ KCBS teams and 50+ amateurs. Teams are jammed into the space, leading to minor mishaps, frustrations on load in and load out, etc.
  • Access to water seemed to have been cut back from last year. In the area of the parking lot where we were parked there was one water tree and it was initially placed in the middle of a traffic aisle with the hose running through one teams spot. It was eventually moved in between two of the teams, which was fine, but it looked like it was fed with 1/2" garden hose, so water pressure was very low. The trees themselves should be fed with 1" hose to maintain the best possible water pressure.
  • As I mentioned above, load in on Thursday and Friday was a bit chaotic. In the parking lot the site marking were not clear. The lines marking each site were mostly left over from previous years and were very faded, but in some areas the site numbers were painted freshly. I would suggest that a different color be used for each year to avoid confusion. Also, in at least one area the 10' traffic aisle for emergency access was not observed.
  • With the double header it was necessary to load in the Saturday arrivals separately, but a moratorium on arrivals should have been enforced during turn ins. Box runners were having to avoid arriving teams including having to wait until teams had moved out of the way. If someone was close to the end of the turn in window that could have resulted in a DQ.
  • On Friday afternoon and evening Roger was running around on his golf cart offering ice to the teams. At that point we had all just arrived and really didn't need ice, but on Saturday, after being on site for 24 hours, a lot of teams needed ice but there was no one running it. When I had time to go track it down I was told that the ice was gone and wouldn't be available until morning.
  • With the volume of teams and spectators the portable toilets were pretty full and had no TP or hand sanitizer, and the wash station was out of soap by Saturday evening. They were service on Saturday morning but either more should have been brought in to handle the load or they should have been re-service on Saturday evening.
  • There was a lot of confusion with the schedule. Several teams missed the Saturday cook's meeting because they were told verbally that it was being held at 6:00pm instead of 5:30pm as previously published. In addition, the Saturday awards were originally published to be at 4:00 in the schedule e-mailed to the teams but the schedule on the web site showed 4:30.
  • I think the desire to make RW&B the biggest competition in the state has over shadowed the need to make it the best. I would much rather see a very well run 50 team competition than a larger comp )or a double header with schedule and logistics issues.

That looks like a long list, but, again, I thought the weekend went fairly well. Even though RW&B is not our home town competition, it is one of the closest to home, and I have been involved every year either as a competitor or a judge. It was also the first competition that Captain Ron's Brew-n-Que competed at so it holds a lot of memories for us.

I'll speak up for the amateurs, which I know isn't the focus of the competition, but someone has to speak for us. We were told that check in would begin at 8, that the people checking us in would be there at 7, and we could being unloading, etc. shortly after 7. I was probably the 10-15th person in line, and I didn't get unloaded until almost 9 - and there were LOTS of teams lined up behind me waiting to unload. It was really nice to have some help in the form of Chad and his Gator ATV (since I am a 1 man team). Having two trucks pull in, then one out and one in, was REALLY slow. We need to be able to get in and get our fires lit earlier than that.

I agree with Ron_L that while Ty Warner park is a beautiful place, it does have its drawbacks. The KCBS comp guys looked packed in like sardines, and the amateurs couldn't pull up next to our spots to drop off our stuff because of our location on the soccer field, which happens to have a fragile irrigation system. Also, we were told that there would be an amateur comp cooks' meeting, but that never happened, as far as I know. The KCBS rep came by with my box and told me that turn in was 2:55 to 3:05, after I was told that turn in was from 3:00 to 3:10. Not a huge difference, but it does matter.

The PA system needs some work. I was so busy loading up after turn in, I was getting nervous that I was missing the awards ceremony (turns out it didn't matter anyway). I could hear cheering, and that was for the first KCBS comp. The PA system needs to be better so everyone can hear what is coming up so the amateurs know when to head to the stage area for awards. Besides, I could barely hear the music that was playing most of the day!

I appreciate all of the hard work that went into this competition, but I agree with Ron_L, too, that I would like to see it be slightly more well run. All of that being said, I will be there again next year, hoping to whoop butt and take names. I hope I don't come across at bitchy, these are just a few observations from my POV. I had a great time, I had fun with some friends, got a wicked sunburn, and I support the Lions' Club and their mission. Thanks for being patient and for reading some feedback from an amateur competitor.

PS - Thanks for the great weather this weekend. Couldn't have been better.

I'm with Ron on both his pro's and con's. Place was PACKED. Personally I could care less about the amount of teams at a contest that we have to cook against, but the logistics need handled a little better.

We've attended several very large contests and when there are that many teams, there's typically nice wide isle ways for people to drive in and for the public to walk in. We don't have a trailer/camper and only cook out of EZ-Ups and one thing I can tell you is that when you have that many teams packed in that closely together it sucks. The water tree was literally right at the corner of our site and when people would come over to wash their stuff out at it, they'd just dump their soap and rinse water out on the ground, which eventually migrated and totally soaked half of our sleeping area. We sleep and live in those EZ-Ups for 3 days straight and it sucks to roll out of your air mattress onto soggy grass. The hoses feeding the trees leaked too. We tried to tighten them several times but I'm guessing that they didn't have rubber gaskets in the hoses or something because there was a steady stream of water trickling out all weekend long.

Another thing to think about is cross-walks. If you have 15 or 20 sites lined up from the road all the way to the amusement rides with nowhere to cut between them, people will find a way and usually it's right through someone's site. We had a big problem with people literally walking right through the corner of our EZ-Up right in front of our pit. I literally had to step back out of someone's way one time before getting into the pit. We had to put up bungee cords and strategically place tables to make it obvious that it wasn't a public access cross-through. Perhaps block off an 8' wide cross-through every 5 or 6 sites?

Some sites were even marked that had to be abandoned because they didn't work. The site next to us had a big tree right in the middle of it and the site we had last year had a storm sewer manhole in it. Perhaps those sites could be used for the cross-through walks?

Not a lot to really complain about. It was a great contest and the double went well I thought. We were concerned about getting meat inspections done early but the inspectors on Saturday were on top of it. It was nice to get things inspected that early so we didn't have to go looking for someone.

Not trying to be a smart ass. But I am on the BBQ Committee for the event and I have not seen the total purse. Where did you see this?

Congrats to all that walked!

guessing he was looking at KCBS website Scottie...
I don't think that's a correct # though! seems like 32K would be more like it if inclusive of both comps?

she looked just fine Jorge, and now she has a buddy!

All in all, I would say given the sheer numbers of teams they handled, it was run about as well as could have been expected. But as others have said, there is always room for improvement. However I think the folks running things did a great job overall.

We were there early, about 2PM Thursday, knowing what plaza st. would look like if we weren't. We had water fairly early Friday, and our power only went off once, briefly, on Sunday. (we were on the extended 30A service line)

During the Fri-Sat comp, we had a clear line to the judges tent, once all the Sat-Sun arrivals got there we had a small detour, but nothing to tough to overcome.

I noticed a couple of really "hot" tables in the first of 2 comps, and we were a bit perplexed that we landed at the same table as one other team 3 times out of 4 categories

One thing I will say, on Saturday evening there was a LOT of talk about how to interpret the new score sheets regarding the table number column. Some seemed to think that the table number changed with each category. Others said they understood that it stayed the same through all 4 categories.

Even some of the reps were confused about exactly how this all worked in the new system, so we are hoping that KCBS will provide some sort of explanation on the website. There are definitely some differing perceptions, so it would be good to see an explanation in black and white.

All in all a pretty great job by all, and the first good weather weekend for this comp in a long while?:thumb:

BTW, hope they've located the guy that hosed your tailgate RonL

I did hear some murmurs about the "much smaller" purse for the first contest but since I didn't get a check of any size the first day, it's all rumor. I will agree with the pros and cons already listed. It seems that loading could have been handled better. Perhaps putting all the people cooking both contests together and filling that section. So that when contest #2 people came in they weren't trying to back trailers in and get situated while teams were running boxes. I know my runner nearly got backed into during one turn in.

The table numbers do stay the same for all 4 categories. There is no system to prevent you from 'sharing' tables with other teams. They try to keep you from hitting the same table twice, but do not check to see if you have shared a table.

I might have said this in my message to you Scottie but will add - It seemed like there were a lot of mini organizers all making their own decisions. I heard of and seen 4 teams have to pack up and move and one more than once after they were told by the organizer (Jim) that they were in the correct spot. I really like Jim as he is a super nice guy but if Chris and the others don't let him be the organizer and final say than someone else needs to be the organizer and make those decisions. Teams don't like to move.

Even with that still one of my most favorite events, seeya in 2015!
