The wife brought home what she said was a picnic ham? After 8 hours on the smoker it looked more like a butt than a ham? I got a nice smoke ring and tasted awesome, just not what I was expecting when you say "Ham".

My wife just brought home a cured "picnic ham". It was basically half a ham. I don't know why they don't just call it a half ham and stop confusing us! :p

As far as the "picnic shoulder" goes I do enjoy cooking those from time to time when I have alot of people to feed.

Like Smoke Ninja said it is fresh pork and hasn't been cured. The word "picnic" identifies it as coming from the front leg rather than the hind leg.

It can be confusing until you learn the butcher's terminology.

You will also find that they sell fresh hams or green hams which are also not cured. Simply put they are just pork.

But you have an outstanding smoke ring with awesome color. That thing looks delicious....
