A friend cut down a southern magnolia tree here in Northern Virginia and I've got a pretty large stack of splits now that are seasoning. I haven't found any discussion on magnolia is the last 10 years or so, and what I did run across seemed more based on speculation than experience. Has anyone used southern magnolia for smoking? From splitting the 1.5-2ft trunk sections, it appears to be wide grain like a fast-growing wood. The wood's white and it has a neutral to pleasant smell. A bit more substantial then tulip poplar in density, but not to the range of maple or ash. Not sappy, pungent, or water laden. Thoughts??

Try it. Fire up a kettle with some briquettes and a couple chunks of magnolia using an indirect configuration. Throw a couple burgers, pork chops and chicken parts on. Fish if you like it. Then see how the food tastes once cooked. That covers the basic food groups and you will know.
