This was my first first hand experience with a BBQ comp. I have interest in competing, but thought I would judge first to get an idea.

When it came time for the judges to sit I found myself standing to the side without a seat. At first I thought me just staying out of the way cost me my opportunity to judge. Turns out I became a volunteer which was a great opportunity. I ended up manning the turn in table, but got to watch much more of what was going on and get to see all the competitors bring in the boxes. The biggest added bonus was just getting to pick from all of the leftovers at the volunteer table. I did end up getting seated as a judge for the dessert category and had a GREAT entry.

I feel like I got a good idea of what was going on though. So I know have a year to practice, figure out a good name, and find some teammates.

Great job though today by all of the competitors, judges and table captains, organizers, and KCBS staff. A very nice event.

I heard that they had more judges than seats. I'm glad that you were able to get involved and enjoyed the experience!

I don't know if either of you saw this or not, but a group of local Brethren are getting together on August 10th for a day of fun and BBQ. It would be great if you guys can join us!

Congrats to all! Looks like a good Brethren showing.
Boy it really is a game of inches isn't it?! It must be maddening to wonder what you could have done to get one more point. And what's up with all the decimal places? Can judges give you scores out to a ten thousandth of a point or is it some kind of averaging that's happening?
And do you ever get to try the food of the other contestants? Or does everyone guard their secrets? So intriguing...

Judges score in whole number from 2-9, but each scoring element (appearance, taste and tenderness) is multiplied by a weighting factor that goes out to 4 decimal places. Even with that, there are quite a few ties.

Most teams do not give out samples, especially to other teams. Even if they did, their recipe probably won't come out the same in someone else's smoker. Also, if I tell you that I use JimBob's Seasoning and JoeBob's Seasoning on my chicken and then put on BillyBob's sauce cut with apple juice, that doesn't tell you how much of each I use.
