Per the American Royal twitter account, the 2024 Royal will be October 30 through November 3 at Kansas Speedway.

This seemed to be later (much later) than normal, so I went back and looked at the dates the Open Contest has occurred in the past:
2023: 10/1/2023
2022: 10/2/2022
2021: 9/18/2021
2019: 9/15/2019
2018: 9/16/2018
2017: 9/3/2017
2016: 10/30/2016
2015: 10/4/2015
2014: 10/5/2014
2013: 10/6/2013
2012: 10/7/2012
2011: 10/2/2011
2010: 10/3/2010
2009: 10/4/2009
2008: 10/5/2008

So it has happened on the same weekend in the past (in 2016), but only once. Hopefully everyone stocks up on their cold weather gear - it can be cold as hell on Halloween in KC!

Thanks for the information, Scott. I have been cooking every Royal since 1989. The years prior to 2008, the contest was held the first full weekend of October. Back in 1993, the contest was held on the 1st and 2nd of October. This was when it was a two day event with the invitational held on Friday and the open on Saturday. There were side dish competitions on Sundays a few of those years, but a lot fewer teams stayed for that part of the contest. It wasn't until the AR moved to the Speedway that the traditional first weekend of October date was changed.

If my memory serves me right, before the contest moved to the AR Arena parking lot it was held at the Golden Ox Restaurant parking lot. The contest was held in the last part of October. After a couple of years of cold weather or snow, the contest moved down the street to the complex and the date of the contest was changed to the first part of October. In 2000, we were there for three nights and it was so cold I never had to buy ice and I brought back more than half the beer I took up there.

Guess I would rather deal with the cold than the heat. I can always put on more clothes to keep warm, but I can only take so many off to try to stay cool. One thing about cooking in cold and windy weather. You will need a warm area to put and arrange your meat the tray for turn-in. Thanks again for the info!

Does anyone know when they will set dates for the sauce competition? Last year was in May. Seems like they would have the dates set by now?
