Sure, as long you use a grill of some sort as your heat source to fry them.

Fried IS allowed, however, as per rule #5 in standard TD rules, the main ingredient MUST be grilled or smoked. So, if your taters were grilled or smoked, then fried, you are OK. If you fry your taters on your grill and submit them as a finished entry...then you will receive a delicious dilly bar in your choice of four refreshing flavors.

It would seem that the use of the quotes around "potato" are confusing.
Perhaps it should be changed to "Oh I'd love to see a "Solanum tuberosum" throw down and see the creativity of dune spuds!"

Dune Spuds!!!!

OK, here we have my cook for the "Potato" throwdown.
I like my sci fi so when I saw the typo and the following questions regarding it, I got to carving.
I picked up some good sized russets. Carved this guy (I won't say what it looked like when I started on it but suffice to say I was getting some very strange looks from the wife) and got them on the grill.

Peeled and ready to mash with a little butter. Added spices and shredded cheese to the mix.

Rolled out some dough and pre-cooked it in my C/I pie dish.

Doled out the spuds into the dish and added the theme. I give you DUNE SPUDS!

For those that have no idea what I'm talking about, it's a massive worm a scifi book and movie.

Back on the grill for a few to melt the cheese

I'd picked up a massive ribeye the day before. Seasoned it and got it on
the grill.

Seared the outsides, sliced it up and added a little butter. Into a C/I pan and back on the grill.

Plated up with some sour cream and bacon bits.

Thanks Joe. I've been a sci fi geek since I was knee high to a grass hopper. As soon as I read the typo, it jumps into my head and demanded action.
