Made the mistake of buying a truck load of unsplit wood sight unseen. Some of it has about 1"-1 1/2" of dry rot question is can I use it as is or knock off the bad wood?

Let's see pics...I wouldn't make any rash decisions.

+1 on the pics. If it's possible to cut out the bad areas, the rest might be OK.

I've been cutting the bad areas off with a hatchet. I lit some of it and I didn't notice any off smell but was cutting off anyways. Live and learn I guess. Thanks guys.

is it whitish looking and soft?

I have pieces like that , I cut off the rotten parts.

Cut it out!

Get rid of that nasty stuff. Could be toxic. Don't take any chances that all will be OK. After all, it's a type of mold...

wood is fine knock off bad an use halve done this with maple limbs that halve fallen from my tree it is not toxic and will not hurt you

At least get rid of the soft part. It burns like crud!

Get rid of the punky parts too. That's the soft, but not quite rotted part of the wood.

If the guy knew you were using it for BBQ, you should get your money back. I wouldn't bother with it personally.
