I'd like to build a vertical smoker. Are there plans available? 24" x 24" with four shelves. Don't know what the height would come out to. Fire underneath vs. fire on the side, etc. where do I go to find plans?

I'd like to use both charcoal and wood and I'd like to build it from scratch, welding up sheet steel. I was thinking insulated firebox and cook box walls? I've seen other members build pics but I have no idea how to design one. I'm not creative at all but I copy fairly well.

I was wondering if there are plans available, free or for a fee, like a sewing pattern for clothes or a woodworking plan for cabinets or large desk, etc.

I did a lot of searching and found plans that included about 15 pages of sketch up drawings for free. This is for an insulated vertical reverse flow cabinet similar to a humphry's. I gave them to the welder at work and I sourced all the parts. This one has 8 racks and I've had 30 racks of babybacks in it with extra room. Works like a charm and we use it for company cooks. I never totaled the cost but it is probably at least $1000.00.

I have the plans on my computer at work and can post them on Monday. I use charcoal or lump and it will burn over 12 hours on a single bag. When I tested it I had it up to 400 but usually run it about 250.

Thanks. Yes, Plans for a design that already works is what i'm going for so I don't have to do trial and error. I'm not clever enough for that.

On the other hand, maybe there is a copyright thing or something if the plans get too close to someone else design...

I just built one last month. I've done four cooks on it so far and am really happy with it. If you have someone with a plasma table nearby, they could easily cut it all out for you. This one has six shelves, 24x24. It could easily be shortened and that would cut out a stick of angle iron too.

Here's a link to the cad file of all the parts:

It's all 1/4" steel, non-insulated. Temperature management is pretty easy unless there's gusty winds and temps in the 20s. You'll save a lot of time and effort going non-insulated, but you'll use more fuel. Let me know if you have any questions.

Copy this one ^^ or an Old Country Smokehouse for direct firebox. Or find a tank and copy BoomShuckaLucka (couldnt insulate). If you wanna run charcoal and/or I'd go direct firebox but It will EAT Up charcoal non insulated. A Direct firebox seems like it'd be easier to insulate......

Now TBone II did Well on both charcoal or sticks. Would have been better on charcoal if heavier gauge and firebox door sealed better.......I'd LOVE an 1/8"/11 gauge version with better sealing firebox door. :heh:

Wow. Great info, thanks very much. My plan is for a square/rectangle smoker. Can I basically just make it an insulated, square version of a UDS, as far as fire and exhaust go?

Is there a favorite (BBQ-brethren supporting) supplier for hardware, insulation, etc?

Thanks to all again!

I didn't build this one insulated, but it basically works just like a uds or old country smokehouse, and could be adapted to be insulated pretty darn easy. Would be happy to answer any questions about how it was built or ideas on how to insulate it.
