And so my journey begins on new construction of my vertical offset pit begins. Just doing some fitting while nothing to so at work, can beat doing home projects and getting paid to do it!!!!! Anyways just did almost the frame work of the cook chamber...should do is tomorrow.

Did have a quick question....do you paint the inside of the pit or just leave it raw and uncut?

Ill post more pictures as progress increases.

Day two of jacking around at work and the Cook chamber frame is built..inner walls of CC cut, FB Cut and bent with plate tacked on....its a good day tater!!!!!!

almost any and everything...we do a lot of infastructor(ya ya mind is going blank on spelling) components to metal buildings and other massive building projects for construction companies. i currently am the cnc plasma, shear, brake press, fitter, welder operators so i get to mess with all the cool stuff!!! although i really really do not enjoy shear and brake press, its mind numbing tedious work that isn't expanding my knowledge of fabrication. but it pays the bills.

Is it alright to use mild steel for building cook racks?
Food grade stainless would be ideal, yes but I'm a
On a tight budget...

I'm thinking of spacing my racks 4.5-5 inches apart with 6 inches from top rack to top of the cook chamber.....is this enough?

I also have 6 inches from FB to CC opening to the first rack...now saying it out loud, that doesn't seem like enough but I need some input from the experts.

These measurements can be changed, nothing cut or set in stone...yet....just mapping everything out and trying to get all my basis covered

Mild steel is fine for racks that's what I prefer.. over stainless

Ya, ill but using 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/8 angle and expanded metal for racks....was just unsure about stainless or mild.

Depends on what you plan on cooking? for butts that's not enough room.. for chicken and ribs that's plenty.. If I were you I would do 4.5 and when you cook butts just remove the rack above the one that's holding the butts

Its starting to take shape BABBBYYYY!!!!!!!!!

Just gotta get insulation in, bottom pan with drain holes, couple cut outs from fb to cc, install FB, and a bunch....I mean a bunch of welding!!!!

The stack looks oversized to me but that's what felons pit calc. called for.

Meeeee toooo.....glad I'm building my own. That way I know the quality of the build is spot on.

I'm really pushing to be done before fathers day that way I can test run it and do a fathers day cook for everyone. We will see how that goes tho.

Dunno if u can tell but first pic is the door welded up...used 3/16" on inner and 14 ga. on outter with 3/4 square tubing in between.

2nd pic is the welding grinded down and smoothed out looking top notch, smoother than silk baby.
