great because i have alot more of it.. gonna cut it up in fist size chunks and let it age.

The bark is thick like oak. It sure looks like it could be, but I'd want some closer looks at the wood before I'd say for sure.

Can you post a clear picture of the smoothest piece of end grain? I blew up the pictures on my phone but couldn't get a great view. It looks like maple as best I can tell from the end grain. If anyone is trying to tell what it is from the bark alone, you will be wrong often. If you look at the two links of oak bark and maple bark, you will see there are many types of oak bark and many types of maple bark with many of them looking alike.

Is oak the only wood that has rays?

I believe all wood has rays, but not all are visible without magnification. On oak, you can see the rays on the end grain and the face grain. On ash, you can see the rays on the end grain but not the face grain. I was thinking about this at work today when I noticed that I could see the rays on the end grain of some Russian beech wood.

It is not maple, it does not have the tell tale brown heartwood of maple.
I looked at your google search and saw at least one example of misidentified tree bark, is was an ash that someone thought was a black maple.
This is the site I use for tree ID, gives you pics of bark, flowers, fruit, twigs and other info.

Here is a picture of a piece of maple in my stack with bark like op picture and no dark heartwood. I will sand this piece of wood today at work and take more pictures. Im sure there are some misidentified trees in those links. My point was that you cant go by bark alone.
