Anyone use Osage Orange for their heat wood? I don't know what sort of flavor it would impart.

It sort of has a fruit on it; hedge apple. It's not something that anything but a critter might eat.

Just wondering.

Thanks.

Very hard wood.
great in a woodstove for heating.
hard on a chainsaw and chain too.
puts out a LOT of BTU ..

don't know about using it for smoking as we don't have it around here.

I use it for heat but add other woods for flavoring.
Works great for overnight underground pits.

No. I would not recommend. I burn it in my wood burning stove b/c it gets hot as heck, but not for cooking. Very acrid smoke.

A few years ago I gave at least a ton of hedge to a neighbor. He only burns hedge in his furnace. A lot of it was fence posts that I pulled out of the ground when removing a fence. The posts must have been in the ground well over 30 years and were hard as a rock when I pulled them up. After a few cuts with his chainsaw he'd pull out a file to resharpen it.

I have lots of the trees on my place. May need to get out the chainsaw and a good file.

Thanks for the information folks!
