After reading a lot of praise about UDS I was thinking about making the move.
Brother mrwhale gave me the last push and some good advice and today I went and bought a drum.

I'll keep updating as i go.

I got some work done today.
Cleaning the inside after it was burned yesterday.
Drilled holes for the intakes

and for the grates bolts.

Assembled some of it.

Attached the handle to the lid and cut the out holes.

Looking great OferL! Can't wait to see what you cook first!

I AM SO STOKED to see you build this beast !!!!
AWESOME!
MARK

not sure you need or WANT those machine screws THAT long.
I know mine are shorter, but hard to find under the black, beautiful build-up.
You are gonna love (me long time) that thing!

I am sure I would have painted it 1st, before mounting
that beautiful hardware. I use Rust-Oleum High heat.
Gonna be a smoking momma soon!

It is coming along really nicely!
Great work!

Thanks brother. You get all the credit for this:clap2:

Thanks Jeanie. I'll have to finish building it first... But I am thinking about the first cook!

Great!!!!!!!
Thanks!

Looks really good, would like to build one of these eventually!
Hope you get to it. It's been a lot of fun so far.

Good advice. Once I get the grates I'll decide if the screws are too long. If so I'll replace them.

Looking good mate, bout time I got off my arse and built one.
Any good info out there?:becky:
Yep... lots:thumb:

Thanks that's what I'm thinking now. The hardware can be easily screwed out. The pipe parts were very well fitted to the holes I made without any pressure or force. Just screwed in. I'm certainly going to take everything apart before painting.

The charcoal basket was challenging to come up with. I thought of many ways to build it. Then I had the idea to use a small grill. They're sold for 10-20$ and are obviously heat resistant and food safe. I bought one with legs, handles and vents.

I opened and bent the vents further to get good airflow underneath. The flaps hold the legs not to close. I intend to use the holes to clean the ash.

I made a basket from a metal mesh and metal wire and attached it to the grill.

Then the handles from more metal wire.

Picked up it feels balanced and light. I'll have to test it for heat and see how effective it is.

That chicken wire won't last one cook. You gotta go thicker, like 9 gauge expanded metal. That crap is like 28 gauge and I bet it melts. Sorry. Others will cry it's galvanized, but there's so little metal there, who GAF.

And I'm thinking the grill base need way more holes in it for airflow -
don't forget - you start your fire with only 12-15 lit briquettes.
Not enough airflow. This is my 1st impression only, not condemning you.
You are on the right path!

Can I edit and say I guess you think all the charcoal will sit on top of the grate?
If it did, you would have enough airflow, but the ash will fall down
and cut it off to a point. You need smaller mesh everywhere..

That's good advice. Thanks.
The charcoal will be on top of the bottom grate.
I had doubts about the mesh but I'll try it and replace it with something thicker if needed.
