I'm shopping around for some nice roasts, what are some sites other than Snake River Farms that I can check out?

Perhaps a little lower in the food chain, Costco, Cash n' Carry, Smart and Final.

As you are in So Cal, I have to highly recommend http://www.brandtbeef.com/

A large number of competition bbq teams swear by their product. They are frequently a sponsor of the California BBQ Association classes, so I have had their tri-tip many times, and they are delicious. So are their briskets

I have heard many great things about SRF and have seen many posts about their great meats. While many of those others also listed listed above have great meat products, try checking you local butcher as well.

My local butcher is also a slaughter house, they slaughter on Mondays and cut on Tuesdays and do retail Wed - Sat. A good butcher can get you exactly what you want and will learn and remember you buying likes and dislikes. Best of all they will cut exactly to your directions to give you what you want.

I've been using my butcher for at least 20 years, so it's not uncommon that we receive an occasional call from him telling us that he has a exceptionally great piece of meat and if we are interested in it, he will hold it before he cuts it for anything else. While he doesn't pay for USDA grading because it is a small family operation, he has lots of cuts that would be high level prime.

Yes the meat will cost more than the grocery store, but you are getting a far superior product which is fresher and not treated or adulterated in any manner. If you know what you are looking at/for, you can get great deals far below the mail order prices.

You can even check with local cattle farms and buy a half of a steer to fill your freezer.

@steveking - FYI, SRF will have our annual "early holiday" ham and roast sale starting nov 7th. That will be the best prices of the season for our holiday items. Just a FYI in the event you don't find what you're looking for elsewhere.

Without a doubt Brandt is a superior product. It's also available at Rameys Meat Locker in Brawley... Have won five state championships with it

Good to know. My experience with SRF has been quite good.
