MoKan BBQ Battle is a new association developed by competition bbq cooks in Missouri and Kansas. To be part of the battle you will need to register at www.mokanbbqbattle.com and pay $25. The fee will be used to fund awards for Team Of the Year, possibly a banquet and invitational contest.

How it works:
All KCBS sanctioned contests in Missouri and Kansas will be included in the TOY score.

The Head Cook must be a Missouri or Kansas resident to be part of the MoKan BBQ Battle.

The Team/Cook must be registered by July 1st to be part of the battle for the year.

Weekly the scores for the Missouri and Kansas Teams will be listed and the combined to see which state has the most in the top 20 on the website.

Year End Team of the Year awards down to the teams and also by state. (ie Top Team overall like normal but then which State had the highest score, same for all 4 categories)

We will be working on a invitational contest that will take the Top 15 teams from each state and they will compete in a year end contest to see who the winner will be and also which state will win the battle! (this is a work in progress....)

We are actively looking for sponsors. Contact Stan at shays@compbbq.com on the advertising/sponsorship for the MOKAN BBQ Battle.

We hope to have a couple hundred teams signed up by July. It is live now so you can register. Questions? I am sure I have missed some things....

Great Idea / MoKan BBQ Battle

Hey Stan,

The MoKan BBQ Battle definitely sounds like a great idea.

I really do like your new logo!

As KCBS BOD member Jeff Stith has said on more that one occasion, the states of Kansas and Missouri really do need to form a KCBS BBQ association that will help promote the local hobby.

This is definitely an idea whose time has come.

As far as I currently know, there are approximately 60+ different BBQ associations in the Americas (North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean). A lot of the jurisdictions overlap.

Ideally, the KCBS would have set up state and regional KCBS sponsored associations several years ago. I believe that they did not do so because of perceived liability issues.

However, the KCBS is now considering setting up KCBS sponsored chapters in foreign countries.

Personally, I feel that a Missouri - Kansas Border War is a good idea. Expecially since the University of Missouri left the Big 12 in 2012!

I do have a couple of questions, and some suggestions.

Question 1: What will this association do for BBQ judges?

Question 2: What will this association do in the off months?

How about partnering with two of the other great BBQ non-profits (Kookers Kare & Operation BBQ Relief [the one you co-founded]) and sponsoring jointly sanctioned BBQ events in the winter months? Polar Bear events are always interesting.

Perhaps sponsoring progressive BBQ dinners at some of the BBQ restaurants in Kansas and Missouri?

Perhaps a couple of bus tours, and kitchen tours, of the some of the BBQ restaurants in the greater Kansas City area?

There are all sorts of possibilities.

The idea of a MoKan BBQ Battle seems to be well thought out.

Unfortunately, I do have some reservations about the proposed scoring system.

I really do have a problem with your current conversion factors.

What about using the the actual scores that each of the teams earned in the individual contests, and total them all up?

That would most assuredly put an end to worrying about tie breakers.

Please do not think that I am a nay sayer, or that I am against your idea.

Far from it!

However, in order to make this work, you will have to go through some growing pains.

You can never make everybody happy.

Thank you very much for proposing this idea.

All in all, I think that it is a great one, and that it just needs a little tweaking.

I am sure that there are other Brethren, who are far wiser than I am, that can suggest all sorts of other good ideas.

I wish you the absolute best of luck in this and all of your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Ken

Thanks! There are a lot of people that have come together to make this happen. I just posted this.... We talked a lot about the scoring and we used several other local associations scoring as a template. We will probably add a multiplier of sorts in the future. If we just used the scores how is that different then KCBS TOY?

We are looking at adding contests from other sanctioning organizations we would also like to promote some more winter contests. As far as Kookers Kare and OBR both are great organizations and we support both! I happen to know that OBR has some fundraising plans that fall in line with your progressive dinner idea but in a little different manner and other ideas...

I believe this will grow and we need ideas and people like you to help us an push us to make this a great organization...Please give us more ideas and feedback!

I registered KCass BBQ but can't seem to find out how to pay the registration. I signed up last week. What am I doing wrong? Also, I don't see all the MO and KS comps listed.

By the way, the email I clicked on to confirm says I don't have the right confirmation code?
