Most cast iron pans have long handles that make them impractical for use on the kettle. Others are square which is not perfect for the round kettle.
I've recently discovered (thanks to the brethren) smash burgers and how much I love them but my Lodge cast iron skillet with handle takes up most of the real estate on pit.

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions for cast iron griddle like surfaces that fit to one side?

We have the same problem when cooking fajitas on the grill. Our solution was to substitute our 14 inch paella pan for the 15 inch Lodge skillet and it worked great. They come in an amazing array of sizes. As pitchingcoach said, "...not cast iron..." so your mileage may vary.

Cast Iron Griddle

I like my Weber 6560 portable griddle...it measures about 13-1/2 X 10-1/8 and is rounded on two sides. I use it on both the 18-1/2 and the 22 " kettle. Amazon still has a few of these left as the manufacture has discontinued them.

A paella pan might work for this, and they come in large sizes. Searching Amazon for "Paella Pans : Cast Iron : 19 to 22.9 Inches" the 2 hits are actually stainless steel though...

I use the Lodge 14" pizza pan and LOVE it. WallyWorld carries it for around $35. It is 14 inches plus two "loop" handles.

I have this CI one from Lodge. Fits perfectly.
