Hey everyone - I am interesting in cooking in a few competitions this year, and have been gathering notes and making an itinerary. Anyway, the point of this thread is this... would anyone be interested be cooking in the Hawg & Hens BBQ Cook Off in Bartlett this year on June 8th? They are going to call it off if they don't get enough cooks, according to an email I got from the contest organizer. Its a backyard cookoff event. Anyway, I told him I would ask and see if anyone else was interested that weekend.

Thanks!
Matt

Matt - Ive never even heard of it. The biggest problem with a lot of these backyard events is they dont advertise or market them very well thus they get few signups. Is there a website or facebook page where one can get more info on it other than the name and date of the event ?

http://www.hanover-township.org/en/OSOT 2011.aspx

This is the most recent site, with a list of events, etc. that does not include the cook off. I guess they did it in 2010, but had low interest in the following years. I came across it on a site that must not be updated very often! Jeez.

Anyway, I'm not involved in organizing it or anything, I just want to cook in a few close backyard comps this year. I figured if I could drum up some interest, it wouldn't hurt. The organizer said in his email to me that they will make a decision in mid-February.

Hopefully it will get some interest from the local member!

There is also a backyard competition that is part of the Westmont Red White and BBQ festival on Memorial Day weekend and one in Glen Ellyn in September. There are probably others that the gang will know about.

BTW, I don't know if you saw the thread below, but a bunch of us are getting together for lunch on January 26th in Wheaton. There is still room if you'd like to join us. The information is in the thread below.

I actually talked to the organizer about this because i have great interest in this contest if it doesn't overlap any others. Nothing was written in stone so i had no clue until today when i received an email. I will check my schedule, but if its open, I'd be in. Its a little over a mile up the road from me. They usually tie it into hanover townships Freedom Bash

I hope this one comes back... I'd really like to compete in it. I know the area well... used to teach up in U-46. Itching to get into some backyard cook offs. By the way Dan, I was in Glen Ellyn when you won in September - nice work! Cool to see a Brethren win!

Glen Ellyn is good about advertising theirs..judging by how quickly it fills up :)

with zero info on it out there I doubt he is going to generate much interest. Like Ron l said for amateur contests you cant beat Glen Ellyn or Westmont

I may get yelled at for this, but that's ok...it's for a good cause. If you have any interest in the contest play notify Tom Kuttenberg. They are not making a decision about this until mid February, but if we let him know that they are people interested, it may make it more certain. Here is Tom's email address; just let him know you have interest in this contest. If he has strong numbers, it may make it more appealing when a decision is being made. This is a Chicken and Ribs competition going on in conjuction with the Freedom Bash, a festival to raise money and goods for our soldiers.

I just emailed the organizer and let him know that I would be interested in this competition, too. If they go forward with it, then it would only be my second competition! It might just be me and Big Daddy Dan, and he will crush me! Anyway, if anyone is interested, I would email the guy. These backyard comps are hard to find!

Thanks for the suggestions on Westmont and Glen Ellyn - I've got them in my sights.

Just saw this thread now. Not sure how I missed it, but being late is the story of my life :icon_blush:

We just had our first BBQ meeting last night and will hopefully be opening our contest within the next week. I will post the announcement here, once we open it up. Be on the look out! Our BBQ is designed for both seasoned cooks, rookies and everything in between.

Thanks for the nice words and plugs guys!

If you or anyone have any questions about entering, give me a shout at 630-890-0465. Info and pics from last year's event can be found at either www.gebbq.blogspot.com or www.glenellynbackyardbbq.com. You can also track us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/GlenEllynBackyardBBQ.

Unfortunately you won't be able to get into this one. The organizer just contacted me to let me know that they will not be hosting this event this year. Going to have to wait until another date and location. MAybe soon we shall meet.

I got the email from him, too. Another one bites the dust!
