Has anyone ever make his or her own Lump?
I have an apparatus set up and will hopefully be making a batch this weekend.
Just wondering if anyone has some insight /pitfalls/advice/warnings

I will post pix of the set up and result.
(or a before and after of me with no eyebrows!)

this is the start,
the barrel with the reburner

The one I made in the pic was very simple , I don't use charcoal , just made it for the heck of it , it work ok but took a lot of scrape wood to heat the barrel, the barrel have several holes in the bottom it does need some oxygen to work. Make sure it cool off before you dump the barrel trust me on this.

That's a perty red liner in the barrel. I wonder if it will transfer to the charcoal. I thought this was interesting when jestridge posted it but have often wondered if its economical. I guess it depends on how much you can make in a load before you using more fuel that "fuel" you are creating.

This is the door propped into place
two more course of brick and some angle iron to prop up the roof and we make lump!

At this point you may make comments/suggestions and disparaging remarks on my welding and masonry skills.
(first time for both)

I will burn the barrel with a test fire to remove the paint and test the bricks.
I live on acres of maple trees so this is all free once i get this done
This will be a good way to get rid of all the blow down (coal)
and the brush (fuel to make coal)

Not when I can buy it for less than $3.50 a 10 lb. bag at the Ozark Oak kiln in Yellville.
