I had the tri tip on the left and needed a second one. I went to the store today and asked for a tri tip and he said he could cut me one off of the hunk of meat he was working on. This is what I got. So, is the one on the right a tri tip? Thanks

I'm going to say no.

Grain looks wrong. To me at least.

Sadly, most Tri Tip ends up as burger.

Hell, season it, cook it the same, and let us know!

If it is tri-tip its not the whole roast. The back looks somewhat like a tip but a mangled cut at that.

In a Tri Tip the grain changes. I don't see a grain change in these pics.

Like others have said, cook it the same and update!
Look at this not as a loss, but rather an opportunity for an experiment!

Dollar to donuts says it's a roast.

Looks like a poorly cut portion of tri tip to me.

I can't imagine why he would cut the small end off and sell you the large.

Looks like it is 50/50 on if it is tri tip or not. Now I have 3 pieces of beef to cook tomorrow. Not a bad problem to have it guess

To my eyes, it's not a Tri Tip. More like some other cut of beef cut in the shape of a triangle. The tightness of the grain, direction of grain, and overall shape looks nothing like a tri tip, or any part of a tri tip.
