Heading down to KC for a couple days with the wife and putting together a plan for a BBQ crawl. Here's where I'm at so far:

1. Arthur Bryants
2. Gate's
3. Danny Edwards
4. Oklahoma Joe's
5. Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ
6. L C's

Any others that should be on the list? Plan is to hit them all b2b.

Great choices!

If you can fit in one more, visit Plowboys. He's a brethren and it's one of the newer places in KC. Otherwise the list looks good. Wanna pick me up on your way there? :heh:

Yep! Head to Blue Springs, MO and go to Plowboys BBQ!

heyyy.... KC native here and still eat it about 2-3 times per week.... You have some good choices there.

Jack Stack and Oklahoma Joes (original gas station location) are probably the two best bbq restaurants here in town.

I highly recommend going to the ORIGINAL arthur bryants AT LUNCH TIME. Arthur Bryants is extremely hit or miss, so best bet is to go there at lunch time when the food is fresh. The arthur bryants at the casino and out by the stadiums are not good at all.

So TWO things.... Go to the original oklahoma joes (gas station on 47th street) and go to the original arthur bryants during lunch.

Also at Jack Stack I HIGHLY recommend the poor russ sandwhich or the crown beef rib. With both beans and cheesy corn.

We are definitely doing the original ABs. I've since added Winslows to the list. I'm a craft beer fanatic too so we will take breathers at Boulevard and McCoy's as well.

Then you might want to take a short trip into Lawrence and pick up a growler at the Free State Brewing Co. Easy to find on their Main Street, Massechusets. Just take I-70 and get off at the first exit and turn left.

LC's is a lunch deal. Look for LC. He will be the big guy sitting at the table on the wall opposite the door. Buy a jar of hot sauce from the rack as non is available with your order. Burnt ends are your choice here.

Go to Jack's Stack for a nice sit down dinner. I must say that the food was not great when we were there but others rave about it.

At Gates, I like the ribs and the brisket sammy.

Ok Joes has good ribs and the Z-man sammy. Get the fries too.

Not eaten at Plowboysbbq yet but Todd is a friend and great cook.

Never eaten at AB as I don't like their sauce.

Have fun!

Plowboys as mentioned and Smokin Guns.

Smoking Guns in North Kansas City is a definate. Another newer place to go to is Q39. Rob from Munchin Hogs BBQ team opened earlier in the year. It is the best BBQ in Kansas City. Definately try his house made sausage and the brisket burger. It is on 39th street between Westport and the KU Med Center.

Listen to the two guys above. They know their BBQ for sure!!

So Wayne, is the brisket burger better than the Z-man?

OK Joe's for sure, Jack's Stack (Crossroads Location) was very good when I ate there but it's been several years. 3 others worth mentioning: Porky's Blazin' BBQ 6 mi south of Grain Valley... Open Fri, Sat & Sun only, has the best baby back ribs for my money... They never cook more than they can sell. Wabash BBQ in Excelsior Springs is good and has a free blues garden every other Saturday night. (Google their website.) Finally, "A Little BBQ Joint" on Independence Ave, has great burnt ends and booths made from F-150 seats and a bar that sits on a '65 Chevy body. Porky's & Wabash have strictly wood burning smoke houses (Stick your head in and breathe.) "A Little BBQ Joint" uses and ABS rotisserie using charcoal & wood. No gas fired smokers in any of the 3.

Make a run out to Sneads, 171st and Homes, been there forever...
Skip Gates and ABs, not all that, Danny Edwards is the best place going right now in my opinion. The new OK Joes at 117 and Roe is the better of the three. Just my opinions, ain't worth nuthin!!
If you do ABs get the sliced pork and sausage combo, Mmmm!

My top three are Plowboys, Oklahoma Joe's and Rosedale's. But what do I know? :-D

Free State just started distro here...good stuff. Guess if we took the highway back north we could swing by on our way back. May do that....thanks

So let us know where you went, what you liked, what you didn't like, etc...
Robert

Glad I found this thread. I'm headed to KC this weekend for my KCBS judging certification and appreciate all the tips here. Can't wait to get my grub on!

I'm headed back too this weekend, truck pull Fri/Sat night up north of town. I'll be hitting Danny Edwards about noon Sat!

I was disappointed in Arthur Bryants, but found "Smokin' Guns" to be WONDERFUL!!!

Got the "Triple D" platter (same platter that Guy Fieri had on his show "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives").

What about it disappointed you? Arthur Bryant's was on my list so I wonder if I should hit up Smokin Guns instead. I'm not in KC very long so I have to be selective....unfortunately.
