Water heater for a smoker. Ideas?

Thanks Junkie. Yea, I knew it was the insulation, but I certainly didn't think it would have a reaction like that! :shock:

Smitty, "No way". I gotta ride this train to see where it takes me!
I've got more "want" than I do money, so when an opportunity like this presents itself, I MUST exploit it. :wink:

aren't most water tanks lined with fiberglass? i used to work at Sears back in the early 2000's and sold water heaters and fiberglass inner linings was one of the features.

Doesn't look like it (from what I can see sticking my eye in the 1.5" hole). I've heard of "glass lined", but I don't think they're using fiberglass on the inside of the tank. If there are any weird coatings, I'll tell when I get it apart. If nothing else, a huge raging fire in there should help to clear things out. :twisted:

The water heater tanks I'm familiar with are ceramic type glass lined. Cutting them will create glass shards and dust to deal with.

*BUMP*

The water heater has been sitting in my garage for months. :roll:
So today a fellow drops by and comments on it. I explained my hopes, dreams and desires for the unit, almost apologetically and slightly embarrassed.
We all know it's too small, but I told him that it's all I got and I'll "eventually" get around to cutting it apart and doing SOMETHING with it, related to a cooker.

Then it dawned on me that I'm talking to A PLUMBER! :shock:

He shrugged his shoulders and said that he had an 80 gallon that he needed to get rid of.
Yes. Yesssss..... this is going to happen.

My pulse quickened, my mind began to contemplate.
My little 50 gallon could be cut up and used for the firebox to the 80 gallon.

Yes.
More later.

Is it later yet?

Are ya' done?

How's she cook?

Hmmmmm?

I've been dragging my feet finding a new photo hosting site, but due to a kick in the pants and a twist of the arm from Jeremy, I'll use Facebook. ;)

Ok.... 80 gallon water heater for the cook chamber, and a 40 gallon (cut down) as the firebox.

Using a "nibbler" to cut the metal, as the plasma cutter made nasty smoke from the burning insulation.;

Coming apart was harder than I thought.;

Thanks fellas! :becky:
I'm leaning towards a vertical cabinet. I like so many things about the whole design.
Thought about a reverse flow, but...
I'm pondering the idea of a grill on the fierbox too.

If it failed with a slow leak then you are in for quite a surprise when you open it. Those things can fill up half way with sediment. Just take a good look at it when you open it my Friend. They rust from the inside out.

Yes indeed. Unfortunately, I live in an area where I'm all too familiar with hard water deposits. I've been though three or four in the 15 years I've lived in this house. One was even the "12 year unit", with the agitator.
