How can I sanitize a large plastic bucket so I can brine a couple of turkey breasts?

Clorox? If so, at what dilution rate?

Thanks in advance.

Hot soapy water will work, but if you want to use bleach use about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of UNSCENTED bleach in a gallon of water. Then rinse well..

Edit: you shouldn't use a container that is all scratched up on the inside and it should be food grade plastic..

You can use hot soapy water with an ounce of bleach to fill the bucket, let stand full for 10 minutes, wash again with soapy water, rinse well several times.
The bucket should be a "Food Safe" bucket (NSF). If it is not rated "Food Safe" you can use a "Food Safe" bucket liner.

You can also use food safe 5 gallon bucket liners. I have several food grade buckets that are sanitized, and I put the liners in them keeping them clean as I use them.

Food Safe grade buckets are available at bakeries, delis, and such... Most are more than happy to give them to you.

Don't forget the UNSCENTED part. Scented bleach is poison. Just say'in.. :)

Thanks Pitbull.... Never gave it a thought as I never have bought scented bleach. Shows how much we can take for granted thinking that others have our level of knowledge.

No problem.. I wasn't jabbing at you and hope you didn't think so.

Go to a home brew supply store and get some star-san. it's a no rinse santizer that is used in homebrewing beer and I think it works a lot better than bleach and has no taste.

Most people use waaaay to much bleach. 200 pp million is correct amount. That's 1 teaspoon per 65 gallons of water. Any more than that you will be rinsing for a long time. Go in a restaurant and ask them for a test strip.

Soap and water. Just wash the thing. lol,.. You don't need to spend a bunch of money to wash a bucket. :p

I found food safe buckets at Lowes in the paint department. Soap and water, good to go. And captndan is right on the bleach overkill. We only use a 50ppm concentration to sanitize municipal water distribution lines after installation.

Yep - I don't sanitize. Just use these liners and it keeps everything clean.

Thanks just ordered some. A lot cheaper this way than buying brining bags and I do turkeys > 20 during TG time!
